SELLERS should practically WORSHIP EBAY

You guys love to hate on EBAY, but in fact you should love this site. It offers you access to millions of idiot bidders.

What the Heck is this all about

ebay item2a334cc83d

$1 face in coins that aren't even in nice shape going for 25X face when you factor in the shipping. I see this all the time on Ebay. People paying way way way more than what the coin is worth.

Do these bidders not realize that you can get 90% for 18X or under very easily ?

I don't win very much on Ebay because most everything gets bid up way higher than whats its worth. Maybe some people just like getting a package in the mail, but I would rather pay 18X at my LCS than 25X on Ebay.

Just saying, all I hear on here is moaning and groaning about EBAY but where else can you find loads of people willing to overpay for your stuff.

Im just saying.

Care to share a "valid" eBay link or item number??
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Half way down the page apmex has $1 face for 18.91 with free shipping. This auction is $21.57 + 3 something shipping and those are some ugly coins.
  • I am currently high bidder on $10 face 1964 kennedy halfs. I am $181.25 + $4.00 shipping which comes to 18.5 X face which is too much, I bet I still get outbid.

I am also amazed at the premiums people pay on ebay for silver. I just don't understand the premiums on silver eagles at this time on ebay.

silvereagle, there is $164. and change worth of silver in a roll of '64 halfs. Your $181.
bid is only $17. higher then their melt value. It might be 18.5X face, but you're not factoring
    in the 90% silver content.

Many people are buying up these older 90% and 40% silver coins as a hedge against
what they perceive will happen to the value of the US dollar. They think the days of
"bartering" for food, gas, etc will soon become a way of life and using silver coins will have
a much higher barter value then paper currency. While I personally don't see it happening,
there are "doomsday preppers" out there who believe it will.

Several months ago, I sold a roll of circ 1964 Kennedys for right around the $180. mark and
a roll of circulated pre-1965 silver quarters for over $160.

It's cheaper for people to buy/own silver in coin form then it is to pay a premium on bars of
    pure silver.

P.S. Your link doesn't work because you didn't use PCGS "http" click-on just below "Message Text:"
and the item number at the end of the string you give is invalid as a eBay item. ALL their listings are
    numbers only. JFYI

Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
  • exactly hchcoin. It must be people just get carried away with the fun/competition of an auction. but its just stupid the prices some of this stuff goes off for.

That auction went for almost 25X times face and the coins were fugly. its just funny to me all the crying sellers do about EBAY when its probably the only place in the world that they can sell their stuff for what its worth plus 30-40% extra.
  • It is what happens all the time even at shops when they do not clearly mark prices etc the good thing I can say about ebay is that it is fighting the internet tax act that would make anyone who sells anything online have to be responsable for sales tax to over 9600 tax zones.

I have had 99 cent auctions run to two hundred dollars for a 6 dollar coin.

I wasn't talking so much about the $10 in kennedys I won ( that was a fair price )

I was talking about talking about

which went for 25X and the coins pictured were ugly coins maybe vg12 at best.

25X face for ugly 90%. Happens all the time on ebay

The presence and promotion of APMEX on EBAY is not hurting you sellers too bad as far as I can tell. Every 90% silver auction that has gone off in the last 2 hours has gone off higher than APMEX buy it now offering. I think a lot of these idiot bidders would rather win an auction and pay 23X face than just buy it now for 18X.

Just today I got a Message from eBay. They want "help" fighting the proposed law
for sellers to collect appropriate taxes from a buyer depending on their states tax
code. They provided a link to a form you fill out with your name, address, email, and
    electronically sign by submitting it.

It would be totally messed up if this was made a law...for sellers, buyers, eBay,
your IRS taxes, etc. See lostincoins new OP at the top of this forum! It's exactly what
    I'm talking about.

Wouldn't silver be exempt ? I don't pay taxes when I go to an LCS and buy 90%. I don't pay taxes when I buy it through APMEX.

It's not about what the item is, it's about a tax on the amount you spent depending
on the tax laws of the buyers state/city.

Noone ever said it was true in "all" case. The link you post shows a quarter that the guy paid nearly $5 for with shipping = 20X. Apmex currently has 90% at 16.85x so after shipping its going to be 17.5X or so.

So buyers can buy from Apmex for 17.5X or they can go to ebay and pay 25X face. oh that's right, its not 25X in "all" case, sometimes its only 20X.

Call eBay's incompetent and belligerent customer service, supposedly located in the Philipines, and then tell me about worship for eBay.
  • Bayard,

There is currently a 1964 kennedy half up with a high bid of $13.81. And if that's not enough of an amazing deal, its free shipping too. Its not every day you get to buy a 1964 kennedy for 28X face. Just wanted to let you know, don't want you to miss out on such an amazing deal.

After the seller pays eBay, Paypal, and the Post Office he's not making any great windfall. I don't care about this kind of chicken feed.

What I do care about is high eBay and Paypal fees, micromanagement from eBay, and unreasonable delays in getting my money from Paypal.

I sold on eBay for 15 years, but, finally had enough of the nonsense and recently started my own website to sell coins. I sold a $4000 coin yesterday and eBay/Paypal didn't get their usual $360 cut.

Worship eBay if you want; however, I am an eBay nonbeliever.

How often do you sell an average looking 1964 kennedy for 28X face on your website ? Surely you don't expect Ebay to bring you millions of customers for free. So that guy got what the coin was actually worth plus about 65% more and he has to pay Ebay maybe half of that 65% premium. No, he didn't become a millionaire off that 1 coin but he made out far better than what the coin was worth. And that's why, through all the bawling and whining, Ebay still has tens of millions of flipper/sellers. Most of you guys have feedback in the tens of thousands, this is a job for a lot of you. So there are headaches. What job doesn't have headaches at times.

I wouldn't bother to sell a 1964 Kennedy half on my website unless it were part of a high grade certified proof set.

<< <i>Surely you don't expect Ebay to bring you millions of customers for free. >>

eBay has become too greedy and heavy handed. I have moved my coins for sale to my own website as a consequence.

Just today eBay screwed up all my searches. They are no longer my "saved searches." Now they are "searches you follow" and my search notifications were all erased by the geniuses at eBay.

eBay gets away with numerous boneheaded mistakes because they have no real direct competition; however, the company does not deserve any admiration. eBay has created so much resentment among long time sellers that Google, Amazon, or Yahoo could take the auction business away from them if they were determined to do so.

    Ok- let's see...

$13.81 for a 90% silver half dollar, with free shipping?

    eBay fees - $1.38
    PayPal fees - $0.70
    Shipping - $1.69
    Bubble envelope - $0.20
    Total expenses = $3.92

    $13.81 - $3.92 = $9.89.

The first "We Buy Silver" website I looked at is offering 15.7x face for 90% silver, which would be $7.85 for a half dollar.

    So...

$9.89 - $7.85 = $2.04 profit over and above selling outright to a silver buyer. Figuring it'll take approx. 15 minutes or so altogether (taking photos, writing listings, sending email invoices, packing and shipping), that means the seller can do four listings an hour from beginning to end. 4 x $2.04 = $8.16/hr. income, before taxes.

Yeah, eBay's a goldmine for sellers. image

It's hit and miss. I recently listed a coin and stamp set (face value of around $2) 99 cent auction/no reserve. High bidder got it for $1.51 including free shipping. Shipping alone cost me about $2 on it.

Then again, sometimes coins go for more than they are worth. It averages out.
