Thats a scratched up mess....way too many marks....list it on Ebay....get your 8 to 10 dollars.....

There's the hit on the eagles leg...the nick on the forehead...the chatter on the 71 of the date....the 2 scratches in the field behind Ike's head.....and it looks like there is some action on Ike's jaw.....I don't see how this even grades close to a MS68......

    I grade it $1. If it's already in a holder then 63.

my wag is the coin is a MS64 , the images are giant so the die polish and bag marks are greatly exaggerated.
  • Scratches could be on holder, I'm going to guess 65.

The gash to the right of Ike's eye and marks in the right field should limit it to MS64. Very nice reverse, though.

I would grade it MS-63, and with all due respect, that is fairly low grade for a "Blue Ike." The coin has a lot more marks than usual for that issue.

I'd call it a 63. But I'm guessing there's more to this, and that it is graded higher. Like 65/66.

It wasn't hard to find the auction. You gonna make everyone wait two days before you reveal the crazy grade?

There's a lot of bidding for the holder.

Surely the pictures don't measure up. image

    64. If it were a Morgan it would be a 64 and they grade the Ikes tougher.

Yeah, yer right. I can't see anybody in this crowd bidding on it.

    MS68

If I had 3 grand, I wouldn't even bid on it.

The scratches are on the holder . . .

But, the whack on the eagle's right thigh, the high-point toning spots on the obverse, the cluster of ugly toning spots near "ICA the reverse, and the two hits below the "Y" in on the obverse, lead me to believe this is . . .

    MS68 !!!!!!!

you should probably grade it Silver.

PCGS should buy that coin back. Something went wrong there.

If it was any other date, you could say that. But for a 1971, that coin is well above average.

Looks solid MS66 to me. The 68 is most likely a mechanical error... somebody pushed the wrong key.
  • Alltheabove76Alltheabove76 Posts: 1,520 ✭✭✭✭
I messaged the seller questioning the grade and his reply was:

"Should you have been a PCGS grader? Sounds like you know more than them."
  • to bad there is no pic when you verify, PCGS has it listed with a $9000.00 value! If the coin was purchased would PCGS buy it back for the purchase price on this one?
  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,313 ✭✭✭✭✭
If this were sent in with say a half dozen other 66/67 Ike's......imagine what they must have looked like to make this one belle of the ball.

I would expect PCGS to buy it back, yes. But there's always the possibility it will be called a mechanical error. Then you're S.O.L. So it would be foolhardy to buy this coin at a silly price (but still well lower than $9k), expecting PCGS to make a payout after you submit it for a grade guarantee review.

FWIW, PCGS doesn't use its own price guide to determine its payout. The amount is closer to a wholesale value. Their offer is debatable. But you have to have a very good case.

I am going out on a limb here but I am 99.99% certain PCGS would not want that coin in a PCGS holder. Heck, as an owner of a lot of PCGS coins I don't want it in a PCGS holder image

I would not want that asset representing my company, personally, and I would suspect they wouldn't either. I also don't believe the seller is completely naive...

I suspect this coin is being listed on eBay because other methods of trying to resolve a situation proved to be less lucrative for the seller.

I don't believe for a second that this is the first time this coin is seeing the light of day...

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
  • There is allowance for 2 points of "grey" variance in grade so this may be "normal error" and 66, or 67. Or maybe not.

Actually, it closed at $3,915. PCGS messed up on that one. Even from the pictures provided, the coin is obviously overgraded by at least 3 points. Even then, I think it looks more like an MS64. I love the IKE series. I should get back into it.
