Good choices. I like the baseball and glove designs.

    PCGS and Dealers --

do not damage these capsules opening them.

they likely will be custom thickness, and those 69's will need a home if someone wants to play crackou later.

On these newer generation mint capsules, I've found a pair of thin bladed tweezers can open them.

I am not a fan of most Modern Stuff that is getting churned out these days but that seems neat. I'm not even a fan of baseball really but that is at least different.

I like it - the design works well with the curved surfaces.

I wonder how the TPGs will reconstruct their holders so that the "highest point" of the coin doesn't rub on the inside of the holder.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well that is certainly different..... not a baseball fan (or any ball sport), but might consider the $1 dollar coin just as a curio.... depends on what outlandish price they attach.... Cheers, RickO

First? What about the high relief St. Gaudens. Or failing that, I'd say the Buffalo Nickel qualifies.

I'm in on these and thats coming from someone who never gives modern commems the time of day.

I think it's a great design that by some freak chance made it to the final choice. The curved concept is refreshing too.

The "gimmick" coins the US Mint makes pale in comparison with many World Mints. I DO think though that the 'return' of incuse is just around the corner

All of the edges on my coins are 'curved', but I understand that they are referring to the faces of the coin

Harder and harder to tell the US Mint from some of the off-shore mints.

Why is the US Mint in the business of supporting the Baseball hall of fame? Ugh........

This like any other commem is driven by legislation. The mint is not supporting the baseball hall of fame - Congress is.

    As RYK said: baseballcardization.

Next stop: a limited edition Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin, colorized, with some gems added, plus a hologram.

After that: legacy sets, starting by reissuing the entire Morgan Dollar set.
  • tincuptincup Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, the coolness factor does apply. It also applies for silver bullets, zombie coins, etc., etc.,

The US Mint has become the Franklin Mint of old. It is following the path of the USPS.

That being said.... will I be purchasing one? Honestly don't know; perhaps.

Is it just me? I would've made the "Ball" as the obverse and the "Glove" as the reverse.

I'm actually okay with this one. 50k limits on the gold coin, pretty low for what could be a really popular coin.

I don't see a huge demand for these.

My guess is cool. Cooler than the boy scouts and girl scouts issues.

Maybe the mint could cross promote with MLB for the start of spring season or opening day.

<< <i>I am torn between thinking that this is really cool and thinking it is a silly gimmick. >>

Well, IMO, it's a silly gimmick.

If the US Mint really wanted to produce a quality product then they would stop producing low relief, artificially frosted proof coins and start producing high relief mirrored proofs and collector coins.

I'm thinking that until they do, then we're all just being spoon fed US Mint "gimmicks".
