A good dealer friend of mine hooked me up with this today - now aside from the 1796 quarter (which I have a line on) my holed bust set is done!

You have a 1796 or 1797 holed half dollar?
    That's impressive!

    Will you remove the plug?

braddick - No, I dont have one a 1796-97 half, those are way too much for me. I meant of the more attainable coins. image

MrEureka - I have not made up my mind on the plug. I have other coins in the holed set that I have left the plug in, but others that I re-drilled. I sorta like the look of this so I am leaning toward leaving as-is.

Nice coin! On the scale of hole/plug "ugliness" this one is not too bad, somewhere between "almost undetectable" and "ridiculously botched" this one shows some measure of skill and I'll bet the coin looks real nice at arm's length (kind of simulated by walking to the other side of the room and looking back at it's picture on my monitor) would like to see a regular pic of it shot with a phone for example, the glamour shot looks kind of fuzzy (haze the lens for the aging star?) and the color looks a bit odd, overall pretty nice, I'm curious what the "net" grade/value ended up being.

Baley - those pics are actually from my Iphone. The coin is quite bright so I need to get a decent shot with indirect lighting as to not get glare.

For the purposes of the OP I think it worked out nicely.

As for grade, I am thinking it is an AG03/G04? What do y'all think?

A good thing about this one is that the coin is still attractive with the repair, but the repair is such that it will not deceive someone who takes a good look at the piece. And, no, I would not remove the plug. It would leave an ugly hole now.

I was half-kidding. Still, and honestly, I've sometimes considered doing a holed type set, and I would never include a coin that had been repaired or re-drilled. My thinking is similar to why I would avoid whizzed coins, which is basically that the changes to the coin are not honest. I want my coins to look like they dropped out of the history book and into my hand. Once numismatists start messing with the coins, all the fun is gone for me.

BTW, just for kicks, the two coins that most recently got me thinking about doing the holed set were a roughly VG but otherwise perfect and completely original, neatly holed 1796 Quarter, and a gem XF+ (but neatly holed) 1795 FH $1. Imagine the type set that could grow from those two coins!

A holed 1796 half in VG-F exists. A dealer friend of mine bought it in 1997 or so. Too bad the hole was repaired so well that he bought it as non-holed. Payed $12k for it and lost $8k when he flipped it, as the previous owner told him "deal is a deal, no refunds."

    He sold it for $4000???

Nice one, Paul. If you need to see an uglier one, just ask.
