I realize I am such a piker when Newman has.....

a MS67 1818 Quarter, but like that's not sufficient, he also has a 1818 Quarter in PR67.

Two 1818 Quarters

One MS67, the other PR67. WOW WOW WOW.
Collecting since 1976.

Only two proofs known! One is in the Smithsonian. This is pretty darn cool for sure. What will it sell for, will it go into a cool registry collection, who is going after it....good fun! There are a number of lots I will be watching and this is one of them.

I have not heard great things about the relevant 1818 quarter in the Smithsonian and I will not assume it is a Proof before I see it. More importantly, there are no other known pre-1820 Proof quarters and no known pre-1820 Proof dimes or half dimes. As for pre-1820 Proof halves, I mention the three that have been certified as "Proofs" in my current article. None of these three are certified by the PCGS. I am not aware of any other, privately owned pre-1820 Proof U.S. silver coins. IMO, this Newman 1818 quarter is of tremendous importance. I have analyzed it in detail:

  • While the MS67 is a stellar coin, and even has a CAC sticker, I have trouble seeing it as that grade.

For those of you impressed by the Newman coins, step back and consider that none have been holdered as "early strikes," and none have Mercanti holders.

    All lower level pieces.

I knew you were a piker before I knew Newman had two 1818 quarters.
