Jefferson Nickel Variety Preference - Curious What Folks Would Choose

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭✭
I'm curious which Jefferson Nickel Variety you would choose? If someone placed these three varieties on a table and said you could have one, which one would you choose? Don't be a putz and pick the one that happens to price the highest in the Price Guide! Anyway, those prices are incorrect, in my opinion. Pick the one you would like to own!

The 46-S for sure. Love the struck thru wire in the pony tail!

    Mike,
I'd want all of them but forced to choose, I agree with the 46-S.

JFYI, the 4 Jeffs will be on eBay this week starting tonight around 6 to 6:30 P.M. PST

I would select the 1946-S also, but I would note that the 1942 FS-101 is a very tough to find variety also!

Just based on the photos in the CPG, since I do not have these coins myself and do not want to spend time looking them up right now...I would say the 1942. The doubling seems a little more dramatic. The RPM you mentioned does not really compete well vs these DDOs. Can you post up close photos or link to them for the 3 different coins? Not sure what bolivarshagnasty is referring to with regards to a struck through wire...that does sound really cool if that is part of the 1946-S and I would change my mind and go with that one. If that is really part of the coin, it's a shame that CPG makes no mention of it. Geez.

Pictures posted. I should have placed these in earlier!

Without the strike through, the first one pretty easily. But considering the strike through, I would have to go with the second one. The RPM would be a distant third.

The 1942; the doubling is much more evident than the other two.

Additional picture added for the 1942 DDO.

With the original three images, I could not come to a conclusion. With the addition of the second 1942 image, the 1942 DDO without a doubt.

I have always thought that the date is the best location for doubling. Jefferson mintmarks on the reverse is a negative for me. One of the reasons I really enjoy Lincoln Cent RPMs is the location of the mintmark near the date. Unfortunately, most of the 20th Century series have the mintmark on the reverse.

I'm still trying to figure out why the 1964-D/D RPM#5 made the Cherry Pickers Guide???? A minor RPM being elevated to this level is quite amazing. The 1964-D/D RPM#1 rocks, what's up with this? I wonder if the person noted as "Reported by:" is related to one of the authors? There are many other varieties that deserve to be officially recognized!

Hello',,,,,? My preference would be a toss up between the 1942 DDO an the 1946 S ,,,They are both very scarce to locate.
