1886-O Morgan; honest grade opinions, please. *Grade revealed*

Hey guys,
I would appreciate your best grading guess on this Morgan dollar. I know the caveats about grading from photos, but I would appreciate a few expert opinions on grade. NO mint Morgans are not my strong suit due to their infamous weak strikes. This one isn't weak, imo, but it does reside in a small white ANACS holder, with a lackluster grade, I believe. Thinking about crossing it with our host. I will reveal the ANACS grade in just a bit.

Thanks for the grade opinions! 55-58 seems to be the concensus. Believe it or not, this coin is in a small white ANACS holder graded AU50. That's why I was thinking of crossing. However, no votes for MS60 or higher, which is the real money for this date, of course. As it is, it only set me back $70, and the strike is quite nice.

Luster was washed out from over-dipping, but I'd say it has AU58 details based on the photos

I've owned 3 or 4 AU58 1886-O Morgans. Waste of money to cross and hope for MS.

    Zero chance of MS.

Getting an AU53 or higher grade on this would be a coup as it may be ungradable due to hairlines/old cleaning.
It doesn't look all that wholesome in these photos. Still probably has the value of an AU coin though. If it does earn a grade
I'm thinking 50 or 53 due a slight netting from the moderate baking soda look.

First, that's one of the best struck O-Mint coins I've ever seen. Too bad the scratches make it appear to be an AU58 coin (I wouldn't judge the luster from a picture).

    That`s a nice 58 example.

I just sold a pcgs 55 that had more surface wear than yours appears to. Pictures make it look a bit lifeless, but if your coin still has decent luster I would say 55 with a slight chance at 58

    AU58
    When in doubt, don't.

I bet that's in an ANACS 61-62 holder!

AU55. It is not mint state.

    Au55 to au58.

I agree there's no way for an MS grade.

Very nice strike for the date, mint, but definitely in the AU category. It is rather difficult to tell from the pictures, but how is the luster? It looks like it has a good chance at being better than an AU50, but 55-58 at best. Like you said, the big money starts at MS60. It may not be worth trying to cross it unless you can get an AU58 out of it.
  • The luster is mottled, but not blazing. Probably just keep it as it is. I thought it was undergraded when I bought it, but the look was nice enough, as well as the price, that I just didn't care if it would go higher.

  • Before I read what it was officially graded, my guess was MS-62.

  • Rodorr,
Therein lies my (small) problem. You say it's an $1800 coin, but 2/3 of a c-note is all it cost me. Just depends on how lucky I feel, I suppose. Jim Beam will likely determine if I send it to our host or not. It loves me, it loves me not...

Mine was AU50. There is NO way it would grade unc - the luster is impaired from mishandling and the scratch on the cheek limits the AU grade to 50. Nor will it cross to PCGS at that level - IMO it would 'genuine'.

    Sorry

    I agree.

I was going to say that if you try a straight cross, it won't.

If you crack and submit, I think it BB's.

Maybe EAC standards the net grade for this is AU-50, but details wise it is 55/58.

Details are only part of the equation. Luster and surface quality too. And EAC???

It is not an $1,800 coin.

I think you know that PCGS doesn't grade merely by details, right?
  • Sorry for the hiatus; duty calls thru the week. John and Bruce - your opinions are duly noted and appreciated. This coin was a good education on O mint grading, and the tuition was cheap. Thanks for all the opinions. It looks nice in its small white holder, anyway...
