  • Wow. Definitely looks like a legit 1804!

But since there is a 1799 electrotype in another thread right now, it can't hurt to ask...

    1. Does that grayish corrosion look raised or more like it could be lead underneath a copper plating?

    2. Any seam visible on the edge?

    3. What does it weigh?

This one doesn't scream "electrotype" to me, but with that kind of corrosion, it's something to consider.

But, either way - great pick! Even if it is an electro, it's worth several times what you paid for the whole lot image

I'd assume the 4 is a crosslet 4, though I can't tell from the pic due to damage or corrosion.
The distinctive die state III cuds are evident.
The color and porosity looks unusual. This would obviously be a major score if its genuine.
    Good luck!

Hard to tell if the real honeypot is the coins you turn up, or the sellers that own them, yet apparently never heard of a Redbook. image nice score.

Nice pickup. Looks like it may be a metal detector find.

    Whoa...nice find. Amazing, really. WTG!

This happened at a coin shop or some other place? And why was the guy smiling when you asked for a price? Not sure I get that part.
    Lance.
  • Holy crap, is that like a 15k coin?
  • Alltheabove76Alltheabove76 Posts: 1,520 ✭✭✭✭
No. Probably worth around $2500 if sold raw at auction.
  • originalisbestoriginalisbest Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭✭
Still and all. What coin shop doesn't at least CASUALLY look at large cent dates, particularly for early ones?

A rare die variety I could see missing. But I'm pretty sure at least noticing a date is coins101.

Congrats to type2 - still smh! image

  • << <i>No. Probably worth around $2500 if sold raw at auction. >>

But its not raw, its in a AUdetails holder from PCGS.
  • Alltheabove76Alltheabove76 Posts: 1,520 ✭✭✭✭
It could sell for more, but most would rather pay say $3500 for one in problem free VG like this one LINK than $3000 or more for a very corroded example like the OPs.

I think he thought i was buying junk and i did as well till i went home and starte looking at them. But the way I looked at it at the time was i'm paying less then $5 ea and if i sell them i can get $20 ea so what do i have to lose. image
