I am absolutely shocked the second coin was graded MS66. I knew that PCGS had finally relaxed on the stars for MS65, now it appears so for MS66 as well!

spots and toning variations provide enough clues to tell it is the same coin, but that is the WORST s.p. photo I've ever seen.
If I were pcgs I'd swap in the T.V. photo for the s.p. image.

Funny that you mention it, that coin bidask was referencing earlier in the thread (pre-ANA gem 77P) is now the latest 66 at PCGS. Check out the images and this was the original auction I am referring to...
I too am surprised it got the bump, not so much because of the strike but because of the intensity of bag marks. The coin is quite dark in hand as well, IIRC.

Agreed. I just think the coin itself should be a high end 67 to net grade to 66 with that strike. With the general caveat that in hand inspection is important, I just don't see it.
Now the real question is, will that spot between stars 10 and 11 grow now that the gunk was removed in the intermittent time between the 65 and 66 holder. That fresh metal can wreak havoc on the coin in a few years...

The best part is that the new 66 is not even a 66 on technical merit disregarding the strength of the strike.

Not having seen the coin, I cannot comment on that aspect. But it certainly didn't sell for 'shot 66' money.
