Hypothetical Situation

Hypothetical scenario - this or nothing remotely like this has happened to me or anyone I know. I am aware of the Buyer Protection/45 days/ etc. etc. etc. The real question lies at the end:

Seller and buyer agree to a private transaction for a coin via Pay Pal Invoice - call it $2000. Invoice is detailed and states exactly what was described in the sale - date, denomination, coin series, slab company and grade ....all the details are provided on the invoice

Buyer pays for goods.
Purchase is a qualifying purchase.
Buyer pays using a credit card linked to PayPal
Item is shipped - tracking number provided

Several days/a week later Buyer receives a package

Scenario A - Buyer opens package alone at home - inside the package is confetti or rubbish or insert whatever joke shipment you like.
Which is true :
A.Seller met obligation and Buyer opened package and has no witnesses to confirm what was ordered was not received. Buyer is SOL. Case closed.
B. Even though it cannot be proven, or dis-proven - even though a shipment was received and signed for - buyer can still dispute
C. Other (please describe): _________??????___________

Scenario B - Buyer opens package alone at home - inside the package is confetti or rubbish or insert whatever joke shipment you like. Buyer opened package and has done so in front of USPS employee(s) or in front of family/spouse/friends who can confirm the package was empty/not what was ordered etc. Not that any of them want to become a witness or get dragged into that morass but at least the buyer has solid evidence/witnesses to confirm his story
A. Buyer is protected and _____?????________ will happen next
B. Doesn't matter there are witnesses Seller still met obligation and buyer is SOL
C. It may help because _____?????________
D. Other - please describe ______?????_______

Even if PayPal declines coverage in scenario A, the credit card company still offers protection to the buyer ... but ______?????___________

You have too much time on your hands thinking stuff like this up. image

You forgot to mention if the package looked tampered with. The few times this looked like it happened I did not sign for them and did not open them. I just hand them back. I seldom buy coins that do not require a signature. I know that when I do, it is all just sheer chance that nothing goes wrong.

There is always a chance stuff like this will happen. Basically anyone can say anything about a shipment, and ultimate the seller will pay the price. Either by the loss of the value of the product, or the loss of good will. The good news is that it does not happen nearly as much as you would think it could. And for that I stay thankful.

The only time it happened to me, the seller made good on the deal. Cheers, RickO

I think the OP is concerned with an eBay scammer sending an undamaged box that's empty or with a rock inside it rather than the merchandise he paid for. If he opened it in front of a postal employee who witnessed that the box was empty or had a rock inside I would think the postal employee would back up OP's story that he was scammed.

I had an ebay buyer return an item a couple years ago, and the whole situation felt like he was going to try and scam me. I asked the postal clerk if she minded if I opened it in front of her, and she said it was against policy, and she likely would not be allowed to enter into any dispute, but she wouldn't mind in case it helped. I'm not sure if you would later have to subpoena them, or if a mail fraud case was opened if it would help in the case.

My mailman wouldn't hesitate to write a note stating what they saw or didn't see and sign it. I would think that it carry some weight in a dispute.

I once took an unopened pkg from a suspect seller to my bank and opened it with 2 very familiar employees observing. Took pictures as well. They were more than happy to help.

? Perhaps this is why some folks post you tube videos as they open their packages?
Showing off-sharing would be my guess. ?
