I've been spotted :)

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,501 ✭✭✭✭✭
I never thought it would happen to me, it was always the other guy who was bit. Bought it here years back on the BST and was spotless when received. It happened within the last 3 months or so, the only 70 ASE I own, never latched on to the 70 ASE craze. Now, the NGC pieces that I screened and submitted in 69 holders are spotless. Never understood why these didn't 70?? If I remember correctly, the PCGS spot guarantee has been eliminated correct? Oh well, now I know how it feels to be bit. image

Funny (not so to you though) how they manifested in the last 3 months after sitting for years.....

Every time I read a thread about spots, I would check everything. All my sets, proofs and burnished examples in the OGP are fine. Really is strange how the spots just appeared and was spot free when purchased in 07. I call it the $175 dollar lesson, don't bother with 70 ASE's, unless you are selling it quickly. I was already completely aware, now it's solidified.

EDIT: I'm not in anyway bashing our host, very well could be from an inconsistent alloy mix, don't know.

I think it was mad that you got a tattoo of the eagle on the reverse of a morgan rather than the reverse of a silver eagle. It was just getting you back.......

Bummer. I avoid slabbed .999 because I figure the toning is inevitable either way. Of course slabbing can slow the process down substantially, but since I plan on keeping my coins for a substantial amount of time, I'd rather not pay extra money up front for a little extra time. image

I know what you mean. I went to my doctor recently with fluid on the knees. After waiting an hour in the lobby, he takes one look at me and he says it's my aim.

I hear ya TwoSides2aCoin, not easy being you. Did my 2 mile run in 16:20 this evening, determined to whittle it down to 14 flat. Took my mind off the spotted turd for awhile.

Last time I did two miles, it was walking on the course. (it's only a 1/2 mile course, but I slice a lot). Took four hours and the 72 yr old asked me if I was okay. 4 hours on a par 3 course isn't very good. I'd put that turd on eBay starting at a dollar.

I know someone who only collects modern silver/gold bullion in MS/PR-70. He claims the PCGS coins spot while the NGC coins don't, and his theory is NGC rinses them in acetone before slabbing. Anyone else think this is true?

Years ago, Russ stated that an ASE rinsed in acetone upon receipt would not spot. I have never had an ASE spot....Cheers, RickO

I've heard exactly the opposite, that PCGS rinses them and that's why spots develop. It is pretty well established among modern .999 collectors that PCGS entombed coins spot much more than NGC entombed ones. I don't own a single slabbed ASE, so I'm just passing on what's been posted in oodles of threads over the past few years.

Maybe my experience is different. All my spotting has occurred in NGC slabs while my PCGS slabs have never spotted.
