As a buyer on eBay, do you care if the listing is "Private"??
If you look at the bidding history on a completed eBay listing, the user id's are hidden "for the most part". So as a buyer, would it make a difference to you if the seller listed their item as a "Private" listing? Do you specifically look for items that are private and prefer to bid on those listings vs. others on eBay?

since private listings significantly prohibit my efforts to contact people about counterfeits/altered coins they've purchased, i am against the private listing feature.
it also significantly prohibits my efforts to expose those that have sold such items.

<< <i>I have found that when feedback is set to private I tend to not bid on auction items and look looooong and hard at any fixed price listing before pulling the trigger.
No not the private feedback setting. I meant when you sell something on eBay you have the option to make the auction private, to leave the identities of the bidders hidden. This is weird to me since eBay already scrambles the user id's of the bidders and only the seller can see the actual names of the bidders.

FYI ... eBay does not allow members with private feedback to sell on their turf. As explained before, you are comparing apples with oranges. Before eBay scrambled the buyers id a few years back, private sales for high priced items was almost a must to avoid the identity of the buyer. Now it's mostly utilized by questionable sellers with questionable products or scammers.

This is what I was looking for! I remembered using this function many years ago on expensive stuff I sold (anything above $300), and I stopped using it when eBay added their scramble. ...I now cannot come up with a single reason why it should even exist anymore.
I remember doing something like this a few years ago when selling computer software. I don't remember the entire process though.

<< <i>Isn't there a feature that a seller can list an item as private so it can be sold to a specific person under a BIN format?

I do not believe that option is still available in the coin category along with so called "life auctions."

Well if they can't list I can't bid, and it takes a long look when it's not there.
