how long after you pay and not receive an item do you take course of action? - *update* coins receiv

I purchased coins a few weeks ago. he received the personal check on 7/1 and said he'll mail them out on 7/2.

I didn't hear from him for days despite asking for the tracking number. A week after he says he would mail it, he PMs me saying sorry and how he put MY NAME on the package but a different member's address on it. Apparently the member shipped it back to him. How that happens is beyond me but I always give people the benefit of the doubt. He apologizes and says he'll put the correct address on it.

That was on 7/9 and I still haven't heard back from him with the tracking number or confirmation that anything has been shipped.

I mailed my check to a personal address.

So how long do you wait till you take action? He hasn't responded to my PMs in 4 days. He has been a member for about 5 years but rarely posts (42 total).

Thank you in advance for your input.

ok. What's the best course of action with a paid personal check? police? bank? I've never had to do anything like this before.

  • Not sure in your case. I wouldn't send a check to any members I'm not sure of. Guess you're on your own.

I'm okay trusting most of the members here. But somebody with a low post count would cause me concern. With that said, if he has a low post count, it should not be a surprise he's slow in getting back to you.

That's the only way for purchases on the BST ( and not by paypal gift either )

  • Check is a paper trail and maybe you get him arrested and sent to jail. You are still out your money. Before PayPal I did a lot less buying.

It's never happened. NEVER. I get my stuff within a very reasonable time. Although over the years on eBay, a few have staked claims within as early as 4 days, and some in foreign countries actually waited as long as 4 months to say they didn't get their item. image A few did not pursue further. (I personally think they were fibbing)
  • Every time I hear somebody say that an eBay buyer said they didn't get the package I want to head right over to eBay and cancel my auctions. Be right back I'm going to cancel some now ( seriously, I know I have a problem).

Just wanted to say I have mailed a check to agentjim and had a very pleasant transaction.

I hope you get your item/money back., The whole story sounds fishy to me.

I'm still not 100% sure it's a scam. I'll give him the weekend but if I don't get the tracking number and a response after sunday then I'll start a different course of action and provide everyone his name and info.

Good point, but checks are still risky. You are pretty much SOL unless his local PD will step in. Did he cash your check? Even if he intends to honor his commitment, there is just no excuse for such behavior.

My nephew sent out a package the other day. Wrong item. He's done this about 3 times now. It irks me to have to write customers and tell them how screwed up I am. image

I usually ask an unfamiliar trading partner from here to swap telephone numbers that can be confirmed, prior to effecting a transaction. Just plain common sense to have an alternate option for communication. If someone refuses to share a telephone number, I consider it a red flag.

my alternate option for communication is showing up at his front door. I have friends in the area too so I'm sure they wouldn't mind stopping by.

    thanks everyone for your thoughts.

As it turns out, the coins showed up on my doorstep just now. I'm glad I gave him the benefit of the doubt but I also learned from the experience. Thanks again everyone for your insight.

For me, it's a trust and judgement thing. If I see a poster being a regular participant here, that goes a long way towards demonstrating legitimacy. In the interest of expediency, as a seller I will sometimes ship while payment is in transit, but only if communication has been open and timely to that point. As a seller I always offer a 7-day return from time of their receipt, so I don't count the money as mine until quite a while after the transaction is initiated.

So you can see this can add up to a substantial amount of time before a transaction is complete. I give it a minimum of two weeks. I've never had a problem with anyone on the BST, and I've bought or sold close in close to a dozen transaction with dollar amounts of $1000 or greater over the last 4 years or so.

As far as payments go, money orders are a hassle to obtain so I can't be bothered to pay with one and won't buy from those that require them. As buyer or seller Paypal is okay but the 3% is usurous, so I much prefer to pay or get paid by personal check. I don't believe in the "gift" option nor do I want Paypal to back or enforce my transactions.

    Just one perspective.

The last time I shipped a coin the day after a check arrived cost me the coins and a $35 bounced check fee in 2 1/2 weeks. I tell people now I wait for 2 weeks before shipping on a check - if they want it faster get a USPS postal money order or PAYPAL.

Even though this was after the '3 day clearing' by federal reserve, the check I got was from a scammer. It was printed with a laser printer and had bogus routing numbers to a non-existant bank. I sent to a PO Box, with no idea if it was actually the guys name .... 1500 hundred miles away was not worth the tracking down and in his state was not a felony theft (although the bad check may have got them some jail time now that I think of it?)

I have never lost a penny accepting checks. Accepting PayPal, on the other hand, has cost me well over $1000 over the years.

so you bash this guy because he made an honest mistake and the coins did not make it to your door when he said they would. so instead of just waiting and holding your tongue you decide to bash the guy on the forum and then when the coins do arrive you do not apologize to the guy and you expect your bashing to be forgotten.
