So... howzabout a DRAPED Bust coin thread?

Just... because.

Much as I love and appreciate the Capped Bust coins, I think the Draped Bust Liberties are much sexier. That doesn't have much to do with how they're earlier and sometimes rarer, either. I just love the long haired Liberty.

The only one in my present possession is this Spiked Chin half cent. It's in relatively modest grade (as any Draped Bust in my ownership is likely to be), but I like it a lot.

So ... whatcha got in Draped Busts? Let's see your eyecandy... the high grade silver, the RB copper (or dare I wish to see RD copper? That would be something). And not just your high-dollar ones, either. Give me your slicks and your holeys, your humble culls, too. Post 'em!

    Like that quarter, sparky.

    Heck, I like Draped Bust coins in just about any condition. Hence this thread.

    One of these days I will find a pristine 1798 cent like my detecting buddies do once or twice a year. The soil here is kind to them. I've only dug one so far (Draped cent, that is), but the one I dug was near the tidal line in a salt marsh environment and so was a bit "toasty". Tragically, I ruined it when I tried cleaning it with electrolysis- I burnt it up to a featureless slug.

    But oh... some of the ones my dig buddies have found... even right here, on very road where I live!


    Here are two of the more recent ones. Not bad for dug examples, huh?

    (Note the reverse die crack on both... what was that, Sheldon-166? Must have been a keg of them shipped here to SE Georgia, 'cause a lot of the ones found have been this variety, and the finds have been made in a couple different counties in the area.)

    So... who's got a "Comet" large cent? Or an 1807/6? I've always liked those.

    High grade 1796 half dime ...

    And a low grade 1796 half dime. This one is the one with the 6 over 5 overdate, and it is, so far I know the lowest graded example at VG-8.

    Say what you will about the abilities of Robert Scott who produced this design for the first U.S. mint, this is one of my favorite designs. I have admired these coins since I was too young to drive. My first example of was an 1806 half cent in AG.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    brg, that is somewhat of a different look but I really like it.

    Back when I bought this 1797 half dime in 1981, I graded it as the finest Fine-12 on the planet. The trouble with these coins is that they were small and thin with no protective rims to protect the design. Many of these coins were bent somewhere along the line, and given the quality of the dies, some of them were struck bent. Therefore finding pieces with even wear is very difficult. Today this piece is in a VF-20 holder.

    One interesting thing about this 16 star variety piece is that the second "7" in the date is larger than the first one. This shows that the die was prepared with the first three digits of the date punched in with the last one left blank. When it was determined that the die would be used in 1797, the engraver grabbed a "7" that was larger and added it.

    Very nice half dime BillJones,

    Might be a good time to show this 1797 13-star half dime, has Fine details, outstanding surfaces, and just one small defect (the one which both saved it for posterity in it's time, and allowed it to be affordable in mine)
