1970 Proof set with milk spots...

I bought a 1970 Proof set not too long ago for $5. I normally don't collect sets, but this one had a very well struck nickel (FS) with soft gold/purple toning, and the Lincoln cent appears to have multicolored toning on Lincoln's body/suit. Even the half dollar has some rainbow peripheral toning. The dime and quarter, unfortunately, are plagued with milk spots.

So, I have a couple questions:

(1) If I want the toning to continue developing on the Kennedy half, should I keep it in the same plastic proof set holder?
(2) Is there any way to remove the milk spots beside sending the coin in to a restoration service?

    1) Yes leave in the holder for the toning to continue.
    2) No way to get rid of the milk spots by my experience.

Thanks for the response, ModCrewman. This may seem like a silly question- do you think milk spots can tone with color as well?

Totally Impossible!!! The Dime and the Quarter are Copper/Nickel in a 1970 Proof Set. Not a drop of silver. So there can be no "Milk Spots".

You should be able to remove the toning with a quick dip.

I agree with djm.... must be residue of some sort.... might try a dip... but if not silver, should not be milkspots..Cheers, RickO
