How about an update on the Colorado Springs fires?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,680 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm most concerned about the ANA HQ, of course.

Also wondering what things are going to be like for Summer Seminar, which starts next weekend.

ANA area is safe. 93,000 acres evac'd, 473 homes gone and two people have died. It is an absolute wreck. There is a map of the zones in the link.

I am living back out here now. The fire started about 5-6 miles east of the Air Force Academy, which itself runs from about 10 to15 miles north of the ANA. From there it spread east and then north. By yesterday morning the growth had pretty much stopped, and then a heavy rain overran the fire.

Today there is no new growth, and crews armed with aerial infrared camera images are mopping up the hot spots. Officially it is 45% contained, but it is not growing.

Will not affect the Summer Seminar at all.

I got an email from Captainhenway who was out there in CO and he said the tides have turned against the fire. Apparently there was a really powerful thunderstorm and things are under control there.

Given its location in Colorado Springs I would think that if the ANA Headquarters were in jeopardy then the entire city of Colorado Springs would be in jeopardy.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

And just two (?) years ago there was a massive fire just west of 25. Glad to hear this one is now mostly contained.

Update. The Black Forest fire north of Colorado Springs is 100% contained. People who still have homes are being allowed back in, though over 500 homes were lost.

Today the area is very smoky from other fires way off to the south and west, but we are doing fine.

Because of the fire last year, I deliberately picked a home site that is not endangered by forest and/or brush fires.
