I need some help on two old gold coins. 1856 $5 Liberty and 1912 $2.5 Indian

My grandmother gave me a group of coins to look at and price out. I think the 1912 is about a $200-$250 coin and the 1856 is about a $450-$500 coin.

Can anyone give me a rough grade and associated value?

  • The 1856 appears to have had a harsh cleaning in the past so I do not think it would grade. The 1912 looks like it might be alright and would sell for around 300 pretty easy although I dont think its worth grading but just my opinion. There are some much better gold experts here though so see what they have to say as I could be completely wrong image

I agree that the 1856 has been cleaned and it looks to me like the 1912 has been also IMO.

The QE appears to be genuine and not cleaned, but also not worth slabbing IMO. Low-end AU.

Both appear to be EF45. I don't see any evidence of cleaning other than being dipped. Circulated gold under a strong light usually show many light hairlines from being in circulation.

About a month back, I sold a PCGS 1856-S vf-25 for $450...so I think you are in the ballpark price wise. It funded a very nice toned 1885-S in ms-62. Only reason for slabbing I can think of is for authenticity. I know I won't touch old US gold unless it is PCGS or NGC slabbed. Too much room for counterfeit otherwise.
