Question about FB, FS, FH, FBL designations

sniocsusniocsu Posts: 1,291 ✭✭✭
I have been collecting since I was a kid. When I was younger, PCGS was in its infancy. I would look through the graded coin inventory of most of the shops I would go to and every once in a while buy a low dollar coin. I do not remember seeing any Roosies with the FB designation on them. I realize that this was not added until 2003, but it helps me ask my question. Are there other series that now have designations that did not when the grading companies were in their infancies? And also, when did these designations get added (year, or generation of holder)?

Any link with this information or answer is appreciated.

I know CAM and DCAM designations weren't used in the advent of TPGs

I believe a few of the designations you mentioned in the title were also added later.

Stupid ones too. All they have to do is be sharper (perhaps just more ferally shrewd) than those whom they pick off.image

No worries, I am not planning on playing the crack and regrade game. For my PCGS type set, I only buy coins with the designations I want on the label - that is not going to change. This was mainly a question that came up for me and got me wondering. I guess a simpler question would be, has PCGS always indicated FBL for Franklins, even on their first generation holders? FH for SLQs? FB for Mercs? FS for Jefferson nickels? Thanks again.

No they did not thats why for years you have seen rattlers and old green label coins sell for over price guide at times as someone or a few someones wanted to get it for regrade or cracking.

As with all things, evolution is guaranteed. So with the grading game.... started with grades, advanced to technical considerations (i.e. FB, FBL etc) and now we have + designations. More to come.. as we evolve.... image Cheers, RickO
  • I'm with ricko on this one evolution of coin collecting.
Before TPG's unc's were the ones to have
    Then came high grade TPG's.
Then came high grade designation TPG's.
and now it seems to be high grade designation TPG's with a CAC bean.

Yet, the coins have never changed. Only the market gimmicks.

The DMPL designation was not used when the grading services started slabbing, only PL.
