Composers/Musicians on Coins?
![giorgio11](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/482/n2DC20VGHMYMC.png)
Being a singer/music lover and numismatist, I enjoyed the thread "Numismatic Song Thread" (Are there songs about coins?) so much that I started thinking about the converse. Are there coins with composers or musicians on them?
I'll start:
--Austria 2 Schilling 1932: Josef Haydn (KM-2848)
--Austria 2 Schilling 1931: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (KM-2847)
--Austria 2 Schilling 1930: Walter von der Vogelweide, (minstrel/Meistersinger, model for Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger) (KM-2845)
--Austria 2 Schilling 1928: Franz Schubert (KM-2843)
--Austrian Philharmonic bullion coins

Ben Franklin was a musician, playing the harpsichord, violin, cello, harp, and guitar. He also wrote the lyrics to the song "My Plain Country Joan" about his wife Deborah.
A good number of coins minted there
And not only was he a musician but he was also a coin designer!

This thread doesn't seem restricted to US coins and a quick bay search turned up both $10 and $20 coins from Liberia.

The Cincinnati Music festival commemorative half dollar features 19th century American composer, Stephen Foster. The coin was issued under bogus circumstances, but Foster was a popular songwriter of some note.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>Clara Schumann is on a bill somewhere. That's one I would love to own. She was a composer too (maybe even better than Robert) but didn't get the recognition since she was a female. If I ever start collecting paper money it'll be composers and scientists. I already have mathematics covered with a 10 mark German bill with Gauss. I don't think there are many other pure mathematicians on currency (although I heard even Andrew Wiles is on a commemorative?). There are lots of physicists. >>
Indeed she was on the German 100 DM note that was the last issued before the switchover to the Euro:
One of my favourite German notes from my collection.
<< <i>Here are a couple of modern musicians.
I love that Bob Marley commemorative!
<< <i>My favorite is the East German commem (5 mark cupronickel?) that featured Brahms and the music for big horn theme from the last movement of the first symphony, but it's wrong. Instead of e-d-c-g it's struck as e-d-b-g, a difference that any listener would catch and that would cost the first horn player their job for sure! >>

and for Giorgio the music lover who began this thread a photo I recently took before a concert in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace, Salzburg, Austria.
Mozart is said to have performed here with his family when he was a child.

I think it was Truman who played the piano. If you think politics is vituperative now, you should have heard his reactions to criticism of the singing of his daughter Margaret.
On the "American Pickers" thread I mused (pun intentional) about Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker commemorative coins. Isn't there a coin with Satchmo? If not, should be.
The first Boz Scaggs album is a 40 year favorite.
Lately we seem to be heading towards "Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime". Please don't include your rant here (he says, passive-aggressively).

I think it was Truman who played the piano - Col. Jessup >>
"According to FDR's mother Sara, in her book My Boy, Franklin, FDR "took piano lessons and really played rather well, only to drop it just as soon as he left for school." Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in her book, If You Ask Me, that FDR played when he was young and very much enjoyed the music of Wagner." - FDR Library

Anyway, if there is interest in coins within these topics, I would be pleased to provide a copy of my "inventory". I don't keep my coins at home but I do have up to date lists of all the coins in the music collection. Please send a reply and I'll be happy to post more lists. Please excuse the confusing numbering system. I have the coins in notebooks with 20 pieces in a page, but I skip numbers at the end of a page if it won't accomodate all the coins of a certain composer or letter coming "next" in alphabetical order.

<< <i>Hello georgio11 and others who expressed an interest in the topic of music/musicians on coins. This is my primary area of collecting and I have spent over 30 years working on my set. It will probably never be finished, but I have hundreds of coins (no tokens but several "Unusual World Coins") in the set. My collection has taken several side trips including, famous performers, conductors, musical instruments, important historical events commemorated on coins with a musical connection, national anthems on coins... , and my primary area of interest, composers. This is a very lonely area of specialization as I have yet to meet another "music coin collector".
Anyway, if there is interest in coins within these topics, I would be pleased to provide a copy of my "inventory". I don't keep my coins at home but I do have up to date lists of all the coins in the music collection. Please send a reply and I'll be happy to post more lists. All the best. MusicAl >>
MusicAL, this is absolutely remarkable. We are going to have to pose harder questions for you, I see. Earliest coin to depict a string quartet in the key of G minor, last silver coin to feature a left-handed violinist, earliest proof set featuring Russian composer emigres to Latvia, and the like. I am truly impressed. I'll drink to your marvelous collection, un brindisi, beviamo!
Best Regards,
George
<< <i>There are several musicians depicted on ancient coins. I don't have any images on-hand at the moment, but the Roman Republic has Euterpe, the muse of music and dance on a denarius, and there are several coins with lyres on them. >>
I also know several liars with coins on them! (Sorry, Stewart always gets me in a punny mood.)
Best Regards,
George
<< <i>Wasn't Bill Clinton ever on a Commemorative? He plays the sax. >>
i think he played the hormonica.
Thank you for your posts.
John, what I have posted is just a fraction of my "Music Coins" collection; the list I posted being only "Composers whose last names begin with A-J" K-Z requires 2 more albums and inventory lists. The collection consists of many sub categories too. I really didn't think there would be any interest in an exhibition of my collection. I have yet to find another Music Coin collector and I belong to several bulletin boards. Several posters send me information about "new issues" and pieces they have or know about to see if I already have them but I really believe that we Music Coin collectors are a rare breed. It would be something I would like to consider but I know nothing about exhibiting a collection. I am most grateful to you for your interest in my collection.
Stewart, speaking of the Bi-Centennial quarter, I guess it's like not seeing the forest for the trees. I do not have that coin in my "Musical Instruments" category. A significant oversight. Perhaps it would be better placed in the "Historical Events Connected to Music" category? I'll hunt for a nice certified example for inclusion. Thank you for pointing that out! You work for my favorite company. I was a "remote cataloger" for about a year with Heritage while there was a transition to a differing cataloging system. It was a wonderful year for me. (Another passion of mine of equal intensity is early U.S. Type Coins.)
George, you honor me with your kind words. The Music Collection has been my passion for about 40 years. I actually started in college when I discovered a few of the Austrian 2 and 25 Schilling pieces for sale in in "Coin World". I have been at it ever since. I started with composers and have branched out to include, famous performers, musical instruments, Opera Houses and Musical Theaters, Historic Events and National Anthems musically represented on coins, prominant people in history affiliated with music, authors whose works were set to music by famous composers, conductors, orchestras... It is a bit of a challenge keeping current on all of these sub categories and some coins I will never own. Music seems to be an increasingly popular "theme" (pardon the pun) these days by many countries but yet I have not met another music coin collector. My undergraduate degrees are in Piano, Composition and Music Theory so you can understand why I so love coins on the topic.
As to your question, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninof and Paderewski ARE represented on coins; Chopin VERY much so and from many countries. I have most of them and if it would be of interest, I'd be happy to send you a list of coins honoring each composer (or performer) in my collection. As far as string peformers, Pablo Casals is honored on coins from Andorra and Spain (Catalonia) but I do not know of any coins honoring the other wonderful musicians you mentioned.
Again, thanks to all for your kind posts and I look forward to reading more on this topic and others on this terrific board. Best wishes.
MusicAL (Alan in Massachusetts)
Since I first posted to this thread I've added the Austrian 1756-1956 anniversary Mozart 25 Schilling to my World collection.
What an amazing collection you have MusicAl. I'd like to say
Of all the musicians included in this thread the one who's music I know best and play the most is Duke Ellington but if there are any drummers around we could sure use a rimshot for Giorgio's post.
.......<< Do the drummers on the Bicentennial quarter and Civil War half dollar count? >>
Only in 4/4, Stewart! ............
The entertainment can never be overdressed....except in burlesque
I assume you're in MA? Me too...but born in NY so I am ashamed to say that if I were a baseball fan, it would probably be for the Yankees. Does that make me bad???
