Anyone here snipe the Super Rare Doily sample tonight?

valente151valente151 Posts: 1,070 ✭✭✭
I have been watching this all week, my $750 bid with 4 seconds left didn't even register as it had jumped above that by that time.

Handcut doily sample label. Very cool and congrats on a cool piece to the owner!

Hope no one minds me asking!

Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for Doily or Rattler sample pieces. Some serious cha ching for a couple of 90% dimes.

First handcut doily sample I've ever seen. I'm aware the first generation rattler on the left is also scarce, but could this be the highest price paid for a sample slab??? I don't recall ever seeing one sell for more. image

IMO I would break it down as about $750 / 110.

In any case, that is about twice the highest price I am aware of. Easily a new record.

IMO Those are over priced, I was watching them. But it is the first hand cut doily I have ever seen.

If they keep bringing that kind of money, they're at risk of being counterfeited by the Chinese.

A lot to pay to have radii on all four corners of the label. Am I missing something? What's the big deal? I don't get it. image

One could get a nice slabbed Proof 66 Walker for this and have a larger resale market in future? What do i know. I do know you could get several Gem Pr Mercs...lovely coins. Plastic degrades over time too...

Yes, other coins have a higher resale. But what value do you put on how much someone enjoys owning something. What if owning a cool piece like this, 1 of only 2 known, is really exciting for someone, worth spending $300 or $400 on that they won't get back? How is that any different from spending a couple hundred dollars to go to a concert or a ball game? Just my opinion.

It's a lot of money for a sample, but I'd much rather buy this than buy a 2010-D Lincoln Cent for $5k!!!!

I can't remember the member's name, but someone out here has been VERY actively seeking this particular 'hand-cut' Doily cert, so I'm guessing it could be him. I'm not mentioning names, as I'm not 100% certain of the member's name. I remember seeing the WTB thread a number of times on the BST, offering a nice premium for one. I'm sure we'll be hearing from the new owner, unless it was illini420. Congrats to whoever won it. It's a small niche, but this particular type of hand-cut Doily cert makes this, (I am almost 100% certain) the rarest of all the Doily's, so it's kinda like the Holy Grail of Doily's, if I'm not mistaken.
    I'll come up with something.

    Hello,

It was just a comment :-) You preach to the converted. I have spent vast sums for the most ephemeral of items that have no resale market at all, such as dried fruit saved from a private luncheon on the R.M.S. Mauretenia in 1934. And I have spent those hundreds on front row tix for Bowie, Waters/Floyd and Radiohead etc. Those experiences you can REALLY not get again. Like a Dark Side of the Moon concert. There could he 100 of these hand cut early doilies? I dunno. I just see a (albeit dimishing) difference between paying $$$ for a Beatles ice cream sandwich wrapper and the wrapper for a sandwich wrapper... image To each his own. A fair statement is I (as in me) would rather buy another item than opinions/plastic of items. I like the stuff! You can always get stuff slabbed later. Of course, it will be a different gen slab.... image

    Best wishes,
    Eric image

Well, it looks like the cat is out - I really wanted the 1962-D rattler. image

It was significantly less than my snipe-max.

Like Oreville said in the Doily thread, PCGS has been studying this one for years. image
