A well worn seated quarter...1860-O

Picked this one up on a bin a few weeks ago. Just liked the worn look of it and for under ten bucks felt I couldn't go wrong. Think it will make poor 1 or still too much meat on her?image

PO1 seems very possible image but a little more wear around the mintmark area wouldn't hurt image

You may have to put that one back in your pocket for a 1; I say it looks two-ish.

Great looking coin. It's got Braddick "dovetail gray" color. I wouldn't do anything to it. If you put it in your pocket it will wear that lovely color off. Should be a PO01. The reverse is always stronger on the Seated coins.

Neat coin....and a N.O. mint to boot. You usually don't find those that well worn.

I found a near identical grade 1843-0 at my LCS 3 yrs ago sitting on the counter with some other newer junk silver. Probably an AG with most of the date visible. I asked what
the price was and they said $8. That seemed fine to me....especially since it was the much scarcer Lg. O variety....the cheapest one I had ever bought in 35 years of looking for them.

FR02 if you ask me. Too much "meat" remaining, as you suggested. It's also possible that it won't grade, due to that scratch in the middle on the obverse.

For under $10, I love it.

Really? In my experience seated quarters are nearly always weaker on the reverse. There is no end to coins with a vg obverse with an ag reverse.

Glad I picked it up! Also its the only New orleans minted quarter for the 1860's.

I would agree with the Poor-1 sharpness grade. It's almost impossible for this coin to have any more wear and still identifiable with respect to date and mint. I am concerned, however, that the white color could end up getting you a "genuine" designation for cleaning.

Wear-wise, it's a PO1 because any more wear and the 0 in 1860 would no longer be visible, technically making the coin unidentifiable. "Barely identifiable as to date and mintmark" is the definition of poor. The reverse doesn't net it up to FR02 if the date is almost gone.

Finding coins like these in a junk box is just a lot of fun. I bought a "dateless" (1878-CC ) half for $5 when silver was a little lower. Had it graded and it came back as a FR02. I still think that it is a PO01.
