My 1/2 Dollar Search

I did $1000 search of Half dollars last night. The first box was a good one I found (3) 40% Halfs & 1963 90% Half. I also found 1971, 1983, & 1984 Proof coins. The 2nd box turned up nothing. I might do this again in a could weeks. Now just have to find a place to dump them.

That's a lot of work for that much silver! At least you weren't shutout. My Bank would have a cow if I dumped 1k in halves on them!

Gas and time to order them, and much of the same to get rid of them!

This must have been fun back around 1980 when silver was 50 bucks, and there were many more unsearched half dollars. For the above results, not so much!

Well. I order them thru a friend that works at a bank and I have to go to bank anyways so I really to not think sending an email that take a few seconds to write a lot of work. Plus I drive right by my bank on the way home from work so Gas did not cost my any more than it does now. I had fun because my six year old daughter loves to sort thru coins with me. So I just do not look at it as a lot of work.

  • what i have found as the best way to mine for halves are singles rolls. The big bank boxes of $500 rarely have any left in them these days. However, a few years ago, around 2009 I think, I had some tremendous luck with single rolls brought to the bank. My guess was that someone was clearing out an estate and just brought rolls of half dollars to the banks. At one bank, my eyes lit up when I saw "Liberty" written on a roll and "franklin" written on a roll! I think I got about 4 rolls that day, and $33 was 90% I never had a find like that since, but I have always found much more in single rolls than large boxes. By us, TD Bank has machines that will accept coins and they give you $ back or deposit into your account, but I believe you have to be an accout holder to deposit the coins without a fee.

When I lived in Missouri, I would buy 100-200 dollars once a month or so. Out of those, I would find one or two 90% and about 5 40% on average. One of the bank tellers was related to a good friend of mine, and one time she let me buy 6 rolls of all 40% for face, sweet times!! Roll searching can be fun, but you definitely have to be in the mood, or have a certain type of mentality for it.
