I viewed an inherited collection today...

...as a favor to a friend - just to let him know if he had anything special. Most of it was junk silver with the usual bicentennial quarter thrown in just for good measure. But....

The second silver dollar that I picked up was an 1893 in AUish condition. I held it out and said "if this has an S on the reverse, it's worth about $35,000". I waited a moment before doing the deed and disappointing us both. Still, the anticipation was worth the effort to look at all his stuff and it's still a better date coin.

This thread illustrates the absurdity of collecting by mintmark.

Always an adventure, often boring, usually a disappointment, but what a kick when you find a "hit" for someoneimage. Honestly, not as much of a kick as it might be. I'm jaded. And I haven't looked at a penny set for years. But the guy's a good guy and it might be fun.

Childhood penny boards of an old acquaintance maybe 10 years ago. Found in the basement. Unlike 98.375% of coin dealers, I'm farsighted. And seeing a coin in the hole for the S VDB, and it sticks out like a sore thumb from all the others. But WTF else I can't tell. The rest a fairly uniform chocolate brown. The S VDB is a swirling palette of stomach bile, Cheetos, lime yogurt and 'Smores.

I don't grimace. I don't grunt. I look at both pages at arms-length. I don't want to set him up just to be disappointed. I pull out the S VDB and finally get the coin within range of my loupe. XF details, ED for the acid. But, from what I can tell, kosher. So I tell him the coin is junk, but expensive junk, the rest are pretty decent. I can get him $600. Not as much as the floor mats for his Benz,

The guy lights up like a Christmas tree.

Often boring, usually a disappointment.... And.... It happens once in a while...... Nice image

Not only is this a true story, but it actually happened. image

I still have access to some new floor mats for my 450SL that I sold last year. I'll do him much better than the $600. lol

Rarely does one find treasure in these 'inherited' collections... but occasionally one is surprised. Cheers, RickO
