Robec's outstanding photo of one of the prettiest AU Capped Bust Halfs I've ever owned ...

... at least on the Obverse!

Robec did such an amazing job shooting this coin. I think I even spot flow lines around the rim in places. I was able to pick out every color of the rainbow on this coin. There appears to be some original mint luster on this coin too (most noticeable in protected areas).

A large sweeping planchet flaw (from the wing to UNUM ) on the reverse kept PCGS from grading this first time through -- so I decided to submit again under the MINT ERRORS category. (NGC put a problem free AU53 grade on it though -- perhaps because planchet flaws are fairly common on these old coins). In any case, this is an unusually large flaw. Interesting slide marks between the UNITED and the rim, almost looks like doubling.

Very nice indeed. A shame the reverse has that planchet flaw. image

Very nice coin (minus the planchet flaw and tarnish).... Although it has the planchet flaw, I would be proud to have it in my collection....Cheers, RickO

I think this picture just sparked my interest in capped bust halves.
    Well done Robec!

Edited to ask: is that a die break I see right above the 3rd star from the left? Or just a little scratch?

An assigned grade does very little to describe a coin like this....... at least to me anyhow. The planchet flaw bothers me not at all. It adds character.

Beautiful coin and one that I'd be very happy to own.

It really pains me to be the Debbie Downer on this CBH with all the praise it's received so far. I see a coin that was once cleaned and now has developed secondary toning. Somewhat more natural around the obverse periphery as there is some progression however the purple centers and entire reverse are a dead give away.

    LOL

Hey no worries Broadstruck. It's interesting hearing different opinions.

For me, coins like this float my boat. They might not be everyone's cup of tea ... but I will take one that looks like this over a plain jane white/gray coin every time.

Secondary album toning looks right to me with the colors maxing out and darkening towards the rim.

    Collect what you love, right?

The only toners I have gone out of my way to pick up have been a few Morgans, but have to agree it is nice to see a colorful Bust Half for a change. Valid point about a high percentage of all early issues having new toning at some point in their life so might as well grab one that toned with color as opposed to the more often seen grey on 1800's silver.

Not my cup of tea. Nice images, of course. Rob's work is stellar. I just don't like the reverse.

To others, it's the white ones that excite them. (Honestly most white coins dated in the 1800's and earlier were cleaned at some point.)

WingedLiberty1957,I'm glad to hear that your alright with a lil constructive criticism and aren't too delicate for just fluffy foo foo praises.

I'm never sure if I should bite my cheek or state what I really see, but after all this forum is about learning from one another.

P.S. I really like the Debbie Downer pic! image

Just got this great PM from CU Member BustHalfBrian about the planchet flaw ... (I asked him if it was ok to share the info)

"Just admiring your 1832 half dollar. Just as some general info, those streaks on the reverse are referred to as "drift marks". They are indeed a type of planchet flaw, but actually occur long before the planchets are created. These imperfections occur during the milling process, the process of rolling strips of Silver from which the blanks are produced. The streaks are created when impurities in the Silver expand during the stretching of the metal while the strips are being rolled. The result of dispersal (or "drifiting") of the impurities are these black streaks. Pretty neat, eh? Just thought I'd let ya know." - BustHalfBrian

I really enjoy getting this kind of educational information.

Here is a close up of the reverse showing the "drift marks"

Nice looking CBH's Lava. Thanks for posting. It's fun to see what sort of look appeals to others. One of my favorite things about the CBH series are the rustic (and sometimes ornate) looking numbers.
