Ebay/ super fast grading services / scam?

Jinx86Jinx86 Posts: 3,710 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sold a coin on april 11, it arrived on the 18th via registered mail. He wants a refund of $1400 when total price he paid was $2100(big red flag for me). He also says the coin was not genuine for slabbing by NGC and PCGS....damn that's fast. He also states,"Would you please let me return back to you? I am Chinese coin collector and plan to be a grader in future. I also collected some questionable coins for research, if you like, please refund me $1400, I will keep this coin for research. Thanks!"

So he removed from my packaging
Its day 14
Wants partial refund

I think hes keeping the coin at full price, because Im not giving a refund. What says you.

Contact Ebay and show them his communications. Who knows what his end game is? He may be planning on sending you back a different coin. He may be planning on using it as a template for his next counterfeit. In any case, Ebay is very aware of the Chinese counterfeit coin invasion and will likely back you. JMHO...

    What says me?

How about ... "I can't believe you actually asked the question of the Board!" image

I think you are right and there is something very wrong in his proposal. I wonder how many sellers actually fall for a line like that?

I don't ship to overseas addresses....as such, I won't even ask for his eBay I.D., so that I can block him.

    Suppose it's a genuine coin.
    Buyer pays $2,100 for it.
    Buyer claims it's not genuine.
Buyer asks for $1,400 back, but keeps the coin.
    Seller returns $1,400.
Buyer ends up purchasing a $2,100 coin for $700.
See something wrong in this picture?

    Suppose it's a fake coin.
    Buyer pays $2,100 for it.
    Buyer claims it's not genuine.
Buyer asks for $1,400 back, but keeps the coin for "research."
Seller ends up selling a fake coin for $700.
Buyer does his research and produces more fake coins.
Something doesn't add up- he can "research" the coin right now and return it when he's finished.

Just block him while you can, and protect your money!

say nothing until the 14th day has passed. Then tell him to file a claim. The claim process guarantees you a voice and guarantees a review of all communications in the message system. Since he mentions NGC and PCGS he has not sent it in for grading. I would not give partial refund, I would only refund upon return of the same coin. Courtesy is paramont if he hasn't yet left feedback.

The buyer is domestic not international. Once everything is solved I will give more detailed info for blocking purposes if need be.

Thanks for the imput so far. Funny thing is this was a $20 pick, but no matter I don't take kindly to being scammed.

Ask him for the submission number(s) so that you can verify. Tell him to make this submision public so that
    you can verify.

I truly dislike partial refunds. Thanks for all the details given on the transaction(s) for our impartial opinions.

eBay has a program to report buyers who are basically trying to scrue sellers for partial refunds with what amounts to feedback extortion.
I would use it. Did the buyer already open a SNAD case? or just ask for a refund?

You mentioned this was a $20 pick, is that what you bought it for? I suspect this is the item ->

    probable item in question

Is this the coin? Did you notice / mention the cleaning on the reverse?

The birds look off for me, and I question the authenticity and never would have bought such a coin raw.

This brings up the previous sale, what happened here?

    feb 6 sale for $2505

Apparently the sale was not completed, did the buyer back out or just return it because they felt something was wrong with it?
I see no mention of it on the relisting.

Why don't you just submit yourself and find out if authentic? AU details cleaned should go for that much.
Give the guy his money back, otherwise it makes you look like the scammer -
you never know what eBay will do if left in their hands, they may hold your PAYPAL funds, give the guy his money back and let him keep the coin.

Interesting when the whole story is out in the light , not to say the whole story is quite yet. It still doesnt make sense a collector would pay 700 bucks for what he says is a fake.

Well talked with the buyer through a few emails. He said he'll think about keeping it. That was last week so Im assuming he decided to keep it.
