The Single Coin For My Collection Purchased At Central States

Many folks realize that coin dealers can also be collectors, whether we collect coins, currency, exonumia or other materials. I happen to not only deal in coins full time, but also collect coins, which might make for unwanted competition for my clients. However, it is rare that I purchase a coin for my collection even though I travel to the major shows and do lot viewing for myself and others. At the recently concluded Central States show I was set up with njcoincrank and had the opportunity, after having chased the coin for a while, to purchase a piece that sang to me. There isn't much to write about it other than it's beautiful, I wanted to share it and I think the coin will be in my collection for many years to come.

I think I might even be OK with the GEM 65 grade too!
Great buy!

Lovely piece, Tom!
Looking at the larger images as Ms. Liberty is real butch on this design a scar from a bar fight or prison riot straight razor is easily overlooked!

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
<< <i>Tom, I have great respect for you as a numismatist and I do love the color of this coin but in all honesty I am somewhat surprised you would buy a coin with a scratch like that on such a pronounced area. >>
That hairline is easily overlooked based on it's technical grading as beyond that it has eye appeal that far exceeds it.
Hoard the keys.

As a buyer I'd love that scratch because it appears to keep the coin at a solid 64CAM which is about 1/2 the price of 65CAM for the date. Plus it seems to have eye appeal of a higher grade. Of course I don't know the premium paid for that eye appeal... Great piece!

Actually, I like coins like this that have just one problem keeping them out of a very high grade. On this coin, the frost is otherwise undisturbed, the fields look great, and the color is wonderful. It's like having a PR66 or PR67 coin with one issue keeping it from that grade.
I'd rather have this 64 than one with scattered tics all over the face, hairlines in the field, etc. Both coins would be 64s, but a coin like this is much more preferable to my eye.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍
