First as an introduction.....I hate Chicago....their traffic and their TOLL rip offs!
Now for the show, which wasn't any better than the above mentioned problems. Me and the 3 coin buddies I rode with finally arrived at the show around 11:15. The Garmin had trouble finding this place, hence the 1 hour 15 minute tardyness.
I walked in the door and right away could see that this was not as big as the other CS shows I have been to. I have been to every CS show since 1979. Several dealers who were always there were not.....like Teaparty. Jack Beymer had a table on the back wall instead of his normal corner table out in the middle of the room.
Anyway, I went to the 3 dealers to pick up and pay for 3 coins (dimes) that had been in deals on the internet. A 1874-S small thin S in PCGS30...a 1821 JR3 in PCGS25...and a 1927-S PCGS64. These are all very tuff and nice dimes.
By now it was close to noon and I started table by table walk of the floor. Looked at a lot of Mercury's, but no varieties to be found. By 3:30 I was done....finished! This was the FIRST and only time I walked the whole floor and a major show......and actually it wasn't even a full day! Three and 1/2 hours.....a record I hope I NEVER break!!!!
At this time I went back to the cafe table area and talked coins with some collectors that I know that I see at most of the big show. I missed seeing Tom (Tommy1). I am anxious to hear if he found anything.
I then went thru the box of coins I have to figure out how many and which dimes to send in for grading and/or variety. I ended up sending in 5 PCGS coins for variety and 7 raw coins for grading and variety. Several of these raw coins were in NGC holders, but I'm sure they will do better raw than trying a crossover from ngc. We will see.
I did go back and buy one coin that I had looked at before. A 1906 Barber Dime MPD with the top of a 0 or 6 in the dentils between the 0 and 6. This dime is a raw AU50-53. So this was my only real purchase at the show.
That's all folks.......Can't wait until CS is somewhere other than Chicago!

Varieties Are The Spice Of LIFE and Thanks to Those who teach us what to search For.
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
Jon,
Thanks for airing all your frustrations - I feel for you. The show must have been small if you
wandered thru and looked at every Mercury Dime on display and still didn't find one variety.
Poor Greg - you let him down again !
I hope you'll give Chicago another chance this Summer - I'll be there for at least 10 days,
the Pre Show - the Pre - Auction at Heritage - and the solid week at the show itself. I'll be
working with Glenn again - covering his table while he goes on another spending spree.
I hate driving in a strange city as well, but as I also have a Garmin GPS - I have not had a problem, yet.
I just picked up two PCGS MS 64- 1906 Dimes - both RPD's. I'll bring them with me in August.
Did you at least look at the 1913 Nickel ? Once in a life time opportunity - I have either held or
been up close and personal with all five of them now. Did you have a moment to look at the 1894-S
BM Pr 64 Dime at DLRC ??

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !

I'm really not facinated by coins like that that I will never own.
Of course with your money I could buy one or two of them!
Anyway, my GPS is better too, I know it's Honda's Fit GPS and it sucks sometimes, but I found that place easily. If you go 90 west, exit right on 53, then immediately take exit on the right to Algonquin Rd, then left on the first light and you are on the Thoreau Dr. Took me 25 min from my home, ha. You can't miss that nice white hotel from there.
But anyway, thanks for report, but please please please, do not come back to Chicago if you don't like it here.
Good luck.
But you are right, there wasn't much to work with. The only truly eye-appealing stuff belonged to this one dealer who charged up to $600-900 toning for $50-75 coins. There were some pretty nice commemoratives elsewhere, but they stopped just short of being jaw-dropping. It did take me a bit longer than 3.5 hours to really look at everything there, though perhaps my interests weren't just limited to dimes.
Hope you'll give the ANA World Money Fair in Chicago a try this August, I just heard from someone today that it's supposed to be 4-5 times bigger than the CSNS show.
[Edited to fix verb tense agreement]

<< <i>I saw the nickel, but did not see the 94-S dime.

Jon... Remember what I have always told you.....
"If I had your money, I could burn mine ! "

Chicagoland traffic sucks compared to other Midwest cities, but it's not that bad when compared so many other places.
Lucky you got away with talking coins at the snack area. Someone last year was doing the same thing on the phone and got kicked out of the show for doing that.
Authorized dealer for PCGS, PCGS Currency, NGC, NCS, PMG, CAC. Member of the PNG, ANA. Member dealer of CoinPlex and CCE/FACTS as "CH5"
<< <i>Reminds me about a friend of mine, don't mind spending 10k on a coin, but let him pay a 2.00 toll on the way down, That's all I hear. >>
It's not just your friend. It's a common trait of coin people, as are neurotic tendencies. This is one of the few hobbies where people won't flinch when they spend $20,000 on a coin but incessantly gripe about having to pay $5 for parking.

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.what about the wine, where are the pics, and what did you eat?
I hate tolls because we pay taxes for roads and they (Chicago) makes us pay to drive on them!
I ate at Applebee's and it was great. I don't go to coin shows to eat at fancy places.
