I hate the "box of 20," except for little girls, and even then only until they turn 18.

That is a question only you can answer.

If it's that difficult for you, then maybe the Box of 20 concept is not for you.

I'm trying it, with my "ADAM" (Ancient, Dark Age, and Medieval) collection. Basically anything that predates 1601 that I happen to like. I just got the box full with 20 slabs (without borrowing any from my separate Roman "12 Caesars" box now). So now that it is full, the upgrading can begin. A lot of the coins are pretty generic and nothing special- just old. But I have some more goodies to get slabbed, so the quality should gradually improve over time.

And I guess that is the idea behind the Box of 20. Quality over quantity.

Beyond that, it can be played a zillion different ways. Pick a theme you like, or no theme at all - just stuff that appeals to you in some way or another.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

The box of 20 would never work for me either.... I like coins of all kinds. Have done series, have individual coins just because I like them... gold, silver, copper - they all have appeal. Cheers, RickO

I don't think there's a law against multiple boxes of 20, each with a different theme. That's the nice thing about collecting; the only rules are self-imposed.

I am trying to follow a 'modified' box of 20 rule. I have 20 different type pieces and their collective value is about 75% of my total coin holdings. That leaves me 25% of my total coin holdings value to collect circ. sets or other stuff that I find periodically interesting. The trick is to not let the 'crap' become too big a percentage of your total collection. At least that is how I am approaching it.

    1) Box of 20 you like
    2) Box of 20 you like better
    3) Box of 20 you like best
    4) Box of 20 you love
    5) Box of 20 everyone else likes.

That makes 100 and if they don't like it, get a bigger box.

I am still working on a box of 20. But I am very specific as to what coins I want to include. Very tough to find , and very tough to digest the cost. Only about half way there. Box would be approx. about 700k-750k once completed.

What should go in the box? Which ever coins make you most happy.

If I was to currently narrow my collection down to 20, which would be VERY difficult, here is what would be included:

    Box of 20
All coins kept in bank vaults.
    PCGS Registries
    Box of 20
    SeaEagleCoins: 11/14/54-4/5/12. Miss you Larry!

    Ankur,

The main reason for that is because I buy better date coins, cant always get the nicest as its out of my league cost wise.

    Jis do what I do.

Take 20 of your favorites and call that your "box of 20". If there are seven or eight other boxes of 20 next to that one it doesn't matter!

I have a box of 20, and only one box. I collect errors so I basically put all my absolute favorites in it. It was tough narrowing everything down since I used to have over 1000 coins but I'm glad to have done it.

I just noticed I have twenty coins that don't match my sets. Things like non-spouses and UHR just don't need sets I think...image

Like a couple of others I dont like the box of 20, I am at heart a series collector, plus I like way too many different coins to even think of attempting this. Mabey multiple boxes of 100. image

Just occurred to me - a full run of P mint Frankies, one example S and D mint of the best dates and a Pr 1950 and 1963 - that would make a neat 20, no? image

Used to bolt 'em to the outdrive on my SeaRay. It was pretty cool how they got eaten up.

Do Boxes of 20... AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, and so on and so forth... image Actually one way to put things into some sort of an order of preference is to pick your very favorite then put other coins directly next to it as a comparison and just keep doing that as you get further away from your favorite... Then it`s up to you how far/many away from your favorite you get.... 20 or what ever...

While we are at it, there should also be some paperwork indicating what you paid for the said 20 coins, and an explanation to potential heirs on how they should be sold if need be. That way they won't end up on Pawn Stars where Rick will call his expert and offer you 10% of the actual value.

Change your plan from a "Box of 20" to "20 boxes of 20"

and then to "20 double boxes of 20" and so on, and so on , and so on,,,,,

    Don't feel bad, renman95- I do, too.

I just got my box full, and only just now added my first gold coin for it. (As of this post I haven't updated that collection page to show it.) I have a lot of generic-quality "junk" in there just filling space. But the box is full, and the upgrading can now begin. image

Oh yeah- edit to add- you have a box of nothing but double eagles and you feel like a piker? Puh-lease. Even incomplete, I'll bet your box is heavier than anyone else's, with all that gold! In fact, I think you suck. image
