good luck, Sam. I once did something similar with Quarters when I rolled the change container and actually received some bias criticism. this can be a funny place sometimes.

Time don't fly... ...it leaps and bounds according to one very wise man (John Prine).

I've been watching the older quarters disappearing in nice condition in change since
they were first minted. I've watched as the nice collectable specimens decreased from
about 25 per roll down to where they are today (~2.75)(6.9%). This is for non-cull
pre-'79 issues. Back in the '80's most of these collectable older coins were in VF to
AU condition but now days they are only in Fine to VF+.

Today I looked at a few rolls that were especially "bad". There were only 2 such coins
per roll on average and they were all low grade and borderline culls except a single
standout. It's a nice toned VF+ 1972-D.

There are several processes that seem to be at work. The most disturbing is the rapid
increase in the number of culls. Worn coins are barely more likely to become culls than
newer coins. Of course the percentage of an issue that is cull increases over time but it
should be a fairly increase. It isn't even for the oldest coins (pre-'76) nor for the states
quarters. Attrition rates seem to be going up as well and this especially affects the older
coins. This could be the effect of collectors as there have been millions of the folders and
albums sold.

No doubt the next batch of quarters will look a lot better than this one.

Oh! The best coin in the bunch is an MS-66 P Denali. There are only 6 BU's with the old-
est bing 2006. There are lots of AU's with the oldest being a '94.

Most look to be AU condition, the 1985D is probably more of an XF.

On 2 April I went thru 4 rolls of quarters (161 coins) and 3 April I went thru another 4 rolls (158 quarters plus 2 nickels).

here is what I found:
The eagle reverse is just barely 50%+, State quarters are nearly 50%.
29 old quarters (Pre 1973) including one each of the five I am most interested in - 1966, 1969D, 1970D, 1971D and 1972 D.
2 Bicentennials
2 Territories
11 Parks. (5 from one roll)

In the last few months I have gone thru 3,788 quarters which have yielded:
33 1966
3 1969 D
13 1970 D
12 1971 D
17 1972 D

I am looking in the D's for type B like type H quarters. As I write this I see I am probably doomed to find none.
From 1973-1988 I found 1 1969 D H in every 13,500.4 quarters (! in 114.24 1969 D quarters) 1 and 1 1972 D H in every 357,760 quarters (1 in 8,316 D's.)
With these latest figures I should now expect 1 1969 D H in every 144,247 quarters and 1 1972 D H in every 1,850,000 quarters.

I am looking for a type C in the 1966's but haven't found one. I think I had one way back, but it was never checked against all the pick up points.

edit: Corrected first line to reflect 4 rolls per batch instead of 3.

Here's a slightly unusual random grouping. Lots of old coins;

On average they are 27 years old. Half are eagle reverse.

The 1966 is the lowest grade I've seen in some time now. It has a small spot of glue on it. I wonder if thin coins are being removed from circulation and the glue saved this from being too thin.

The number nice of pre-1980 quarters is continuing to plummet and XF's seem to be almost a thing of the past. It seems collectors are finally starting to look at these coins. If the government is removing worn coins and culls production of new quarters will remain high making the older coins appear "scarce".

All 2012-S El Yunque. I bought a 100-coin bag a while back, kept several nice ones and am slowly spending the rest. It's fun to imagine a roll searcher finding one of them years from now, and then trying to figure out where to place it in an album that only has slots for the P and D coins.
