1888-S Seated Liberty quarter (w/grading poll)

I think this is my twelfth purchase for the 19th century VF-XF Basic Type Set.

I had $40-ish in eBay Bucks to burn. This coin cost me $30-ish in addition to that. Not including the eBay Bucks, it cost me $32.10, to be precise. I liked it for the CircCam contrast, of course.

For the record, I went with the neutral option in the poll, though if one twisted my arm hard enough and forced me to pick a grade, I'd probably go 35, if it were somebody else's coin. So far that seems to be the majority opinion, too, it would seem.

A very eye-appealing example. Nice pick up!

I voted XF40 w/o looking at the enlarged photos. Now I see that those obv fields are bit light in color and sort of look wiped/brushed/"improved." Could still be an XF40 but
would not be surprised if slightly netted down to VF35 for those fields. Much of the coin is darkish so I would check to see if there's any crud, corrosion, env damage lurking there.

    I voted 35.
  • Hi LM,

I did not vote. The surfaces look a little odd, the color - I dunno, but I think someone did a little something somewhere.

    Best,

Eh, yeah, maybe a bit of the old wiperoo in the past.

Think I can live with it, regardless. Especially for 32 bucks.

It'll do for my mostly raw VF-XF set. I look forward to checking it out in hand. Will probably reimage (scan) it then.

XF40 with the contrasting toning I love.

    Kudos.

I said 40, but it could net at 35 for those scratches on the obverse

I go with EF 40 details, I agree it does look wiped very lightly but maybe not in hand.

  • Love the look..nice pickup Rob!

I would venture 35 or 40...looks like it has a lot of meat left.

<< <i>I said 40, but it could net at 35 for those scratches on the obverse >>

I'm hoping that's just a toning streak or mark going from Liberty's right elbow to Star #5, and not an actual scratch. But I guess it could be an old hairline.

    35. But I could see it getting a 40 on a good day.

You are going to have to add another title to your coin identity - you should also be known as Sir Cam!

I never used to pay any attention to low grade circulated stuff in general - now I'm always trying to find circulated cameo pieces - with not much success so far, but the hunt is fun image

    Thanks for that.

Hey, small-budget guys like me need some kind of gimmick to stand out in the crowd, right? image
