I just paid a "Stupid Tax"

I was shooting some pics of coins I was going to list on eBay. Some how one of my light stands fell over right on this proof 1951 dime leaving a scratch from the rim to the cheek. At least it wasn't the cameo Franklin. I'm sure we've all paid some Stupid Tax, what's yours?

Dealer friend of mine had a beautiful MS63ish 1818 Quarter that he carried around in his pocket inside a hard plastic holder made for a Half Dollar. (Early quarters such as this were not struck in collar, so their diameter larger than a more recent quarter, hence needing a larger holder). Needless to say, it jingled around in there and ended up wearing off some of the toning on the high parts of the coin. He finally sent it in to PCGS, where it got AU58.

YESTERDAY, ....... I went kayak fishing in the Pacific before sunrise until about 11 am.

I go to get my truck and there is a Parking Citation on my truck, and I'm wtf, I am parked in the perfect place in La Jolla and have parked there many times before .......

I have to read over the ticket a few times to even realize why I had gotten a ticket.

I come to find out that my Month sticker on my license plate had been stolen or had fallen off.

I did have a current 2013 registration sicker on the other side and it is still current.

I am appealing the citation with the city as in my eye I was at no fault altho I can see where the cop was in the right to do it, but he must have been bored.

Total wtf tax $60

I have paid the stupid tax time and again. For me, it usually comes in the form of buying coins that I'm not positively enthralled by, then selling them for a loss sometime later.

Problem is, if I only bought coins that "do it" for me, I'd only buy one or two a year. As an addict with OCD, that just won't do!

I paid the local property tax office almost 20k before the first day of feb 2013. I call that a stupid tax.

All the mistakes i create myself that cost me money are "learning mistakes" on these at least i had control of the outcome. On the property tax i am not so sure it was spent wisely. lol

I lost a cool error wheat cent about 2 years ago. I was having trouble taking pics so i removed it from the 2 x 2. I had it in my photo cube set up and halfway thru taking pics i got a call and had to flee the scene asap. To this day still have no clue where the wheat cent went. My wife may have tossed it into a bag of wheaties, spent it, or i may have moved it and forgot the location. Still missing and i place a value of about 500 bucks on the error coin.

We just got our Property Tax bill in the mail... Surprise! The assessed value of our home dropped about $6K, but they raised the rates so our bill jumped about $600 to $9,234.

This happened to me years ago. Ever since then, after applying the new sticker to my license plate I score it several times with a razor blade, criss-crossing at angles. It is obvious to anyone who looks closely at it and totally useless to some jerk who may want to steal it (it would come off in pieces).

I got distracted with work obligations and some other activities back in January. As a result, I paid my property tax one freakin' day late, even though there was no shortage of funds to pay it. I think I got hammered for over $150 in penalties and fees for absolutely no reason other than forgetting when it was due.

In my haste to open a stapled 2 x 2 containing a nice XF half cent I raked the reverse with one of the staples. Then, to add insult to injury I dropped it on the floor, where it promptly rolled into one of those louvered floor grates and then four feet up the duct pipes. Scratched it before it went in, then scratched it fishing it out. It was one of those days

Dropped a nice proof silver coin and caught it with my bare hands...putting a clear fingerprint on the mirrors. That is when I discovered that the immediate application of Dawn dishwashing fluid to the coin and let it set for forty five minutes, followed by a hot water rinse and alcohol would leave a coin print free. If I had let it set though, it would have etched the surface and nothing would have helped. Cheers, RickO
