Yesterday's Flip...The 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set...Predictions?

philographerphilographer Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's been about a year and a half since these were issued.

You remember the rush to buy and the phones going down, servers crashing,

the pre-sales cancelled by eBay,

the 462 PCGS threads on the topic,

the endless label options (First Strike, Flag, Mercanti...),

the spike in prices and the inevitable drop,

the milk spots.

It's yesterday's flip. Time for a revisit...

Are there 100,000 collectors out there clamoring for these?

Where will prices be in a year, 5 years?

How damaging is the milk spot issue to the collectibility of this set?

What do you wish you did differently...

Will there be another flip like this?????

He who knows he has enough is rich.

The last silver coins I sent to PCGS for grading were from the 2006 Anniversary Set.

I don't intend on increasing my chance for spotting by sending raw ASE coins to PCGS for grading when I can just hold tight.

As far as predictions, I hope mine go up in value. I am in no hurry.

Blah I just did an extreme examination of my coins and I think the issues on the moderns are impossible to get away from. I just have to accept it and let it be I guess, but I think the reverse proof maintains it's integrity the best of all the 5 coins, so I guess that's a good thing.

On a high note I think they did a much better job on the 2012 S 2 coin 75th set than the 2011.

    - Don't wait till tomorrow to flip something you can flip today
    - No more submitting ASEs for grading

A: Yes, but they're still playing on Facebook
Where will prices be in a year, 5 years?
A: they will be through the roof, or at spot prices and melted for computer hardware
How damaging is the milk spot issue to the collectibility of this set?
A: As damaging as it is to all silver american eagles with milk spots.
What do you wish you did differently...
A: Nothing. I'm the ballsiest son of mum I know
Will there be another flip like this?????
    A: Without a doubt

I had 30 sets. Took the moon money and ran for the exit.

I had 230 sets, did ok, The spots are showing up like crazy after a year in plastic. Sent 40 coins off to PCGS, and they downgraded none, removed all spots, so they seem to have a handle on it, for a fee.

Kept 1 set of MS70, no issues so far for spotting. Sold three Bof5s back in the day@ the $3700 - $4000 level. Man those were the days!

Oh yeah, forgot getting involved with a pre-sale BST deal with a dealer on my fourth Bof5. That kinda sucked, but I learned my lesson.

    I only order one box of five, which I brought to the FUN show intact;
the gals opened it up and I took one raw set out for my collection &
had the other four sets graded. Ended up getting one set in MS/ PR 70
and the others in 68's & 69's. I held on too long and sold them six months
later to Silver Town at another show... Seems I got the best wholesale price
available... I made a few bucks... and the sets I ended up keeping were
    essentially free.

I hate selling on eBay, too much aggravation dealing with some of their patrons.
Would rather sell on the BST here. If it doesn't sell here, I go to enough shows
so I know I'll sell there.

Since then, I have only ordered one set of the San Francisco issue and individual
ASE's that have been issued directly from the Mint.

Never pre-sell to a dealer, you'll wind up getting a much lower price. Wait until after they hit the market.

Depending on the issue, the aftermarket could be a huge flop and you could come out on top pre-selling.

True on some issues (2010 mint issued ATBs) but on this one you would have got smoked! Many dealers here were only offering $350...

I've still got a sealed box that I was going to keep but may sell, but, it was ordered by a relative (I paid them for it) and I don't know, offhand, whether it is 2 or 3 sets.
    Anyone remember the weights?

This box says something like 6 pounds on the shipping label.

Depends on who the modern market players are as well as the US Mint and what they both decide to do with this series as time goes on. We are beholden to them in my opinion as we are all small players except for a few.

That is just the way it is, not good not bad.

It also depends on what the US Mint will do with this issue in the future. Maybe they make a 25k mintage ASE Single Type issue... I think at 100K mintage they are a good hold.

Going to submit a sealed set tommorow at the Baltimore show. FS Eligible only because to ship the box to PCGS registered mail would cost $50. If it does well it will be sold right away. Also a 2006 FS PCGS Reverse Proof and a 2007 W MS ASE will be submitted for spot review.

IIRC they were approx. 3lbs each so 2 sets would be 6lbs. I know in the monster thread there were weight posts.

Thank you. I was leaning towards thinking it was 2, but didn't want to screw myself, nor my relative whom I said I would split any profits with. Already paid the cost of the sets, but with some bills and changes coming up, I am paring down a few items and this is bulky enough to be part of it.

    Appreciate the info.

Got 5 sets. Got them graded - 2 sets MS70, the rest a mix of 69/70.
Saved one 70 set and sold all the others at a good price.
Made about $1000 after the initial cost/grading fees/shipping/eBay/PayPal's cut and got a free MS70 set, so I was gruntled. image
But I probably would have made more if a just sold the 5 sets in a sealed box.
  • I purchased 9 sets for $600 each from people who had gotten them from the mint with the intention of holding for 2-3 years hoping for a 50% or more return, long story short I found other things to buy so I sold every set but one for $700 to a local dealer. I kept the other set for 6 more months then found some neat odd size silver bars at one of the dealers and traded in my last set for $675, so after it was all said and done I made $875 on the sets but still have two reverse proofs, one in a PCGS-69 Mercanti tombstone holder and the other in a PCGS-69 flag holder which I paid $250 each for.

I had 5 sealed boxes of 5 sets. Sold 4 of them sealed and sent one in for grading. Didn't get a full 70 set (missing the bullion MS70), but was able to swing a trade on the BST for it. After all was said and done, I ended up with a free 70 set, plus an extra 70 RP, and...an 1836 Gobrecht dollar to complete my dollar type set!!!

I got one box of five and flipped it at a good price. I'm glad I sold them when I did and don't regret a thing. Anyone have a prediction on the next flip to come out?

I think interest in these sets is picking back up and/or the supply is drying up.

I've had four of my 5 sets on the BST and Ebay since November. Didn't sell any until about 2 weeks ago. Sold my last two sets today. Keeping the 5th raw for myself, plus an NGC 70 set I picked up a while back.

the big downer is the spots when they appear out of the blue .. local coin show interest is very small in the set except for rev proof
  • alohagaryalohagary Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭✭
How much did pcgs charge to remove the spots in the graded sets. Could they down grade the coins
    Thanks
