I wonder if it's the same owner who revived their green slab inserts for a while, along with the 9 digit coding a few months ago.

I don't think so, he was from the South. The new one is in NY.

The Long Island street address provided on the company website is a familiar looking address.

Edited to revise response: You are correct. Looks as if the new owner(s) don't want to reveal a physical business location, possibly for security reasons. The mailing address for PCI appears to be very close to a nearby wholesale coin establishment that I am familiar with, and an acquisition of PCI by the company I know of would not be a surprise to me.

At least they have a newly designed label, that's all I care about.

Actually, all TPGs use their own grading standards. There are no universally followed standards for grading.

The way I remember was that J.T. Staton was involved with them for awhile and when eBay said only
PCGS and NGC could be used in the title line on their auctions he was upset to say the least. The company
got sold to David Lawrence Rare Coins where the name got changed to Dominion Grading Service witch I've
never seen any of the slabs. Perhaps they changed it back to PCI and with a newer label. I have seen a few
of them and not impressed with them. I like the old green or gold PCI label slabs and rememger sending in
a bunch to the old Photo Certified Inst. company.

The fact that there is a mystery about who owns it, where they do business, etc, really says something.

The early PCI coins were fairly conservatively graded.

During the period when Lewis Revels owned PCI, grades were reasonably consistent and accurate. I just acquired an 1807 Draped Bust half that is all there for the assigned grade (VF30), and I didn't have to pay anywhere near the market price of a top tier TPG holdered coin.

    But who is it now?
  • For what it's worth, I (myself, as sole owner of David Lawrence Rare Coins) sold the PCI name and slab back in 2010. And, for the record, I/we never slabbed a single coin using a PCI-branded insert. I always considered the brand name to be clouded by controversy, so we re-branded it as DGS (Dominion Grading Services). We tried it for a few years but I think our grading was too conservative to be competitive in the marketplace at that time. I also don't know anything about the current ownership -- I was under the impression the person who bought it from me re-sold it fairly quickly.

I can't say affirmatively, but a fee based search through Dunn & Bradstreet should get the answer you seem to need.

A simple lookup at whois.com reveals the name of the current administrator of the company website.

Is that the best way to show off your front page is with a bunch of MS70 bullion? Doesn't that already give the impression that they're not a serious player?

PCI (Photo Certified Institute) The company was founded in 1986 the same year as PCGS. The founder's name was Louis Revels. He used a rectangular slab (similar to ACG at the time) until Hallmark folded and he bought their slabbing material. The company was in business till the 4th owner, Brain Beardsley, died in 2007. The company was then auctioned off and was bought by David Lawerence Coins. They renamed the company DGS (Dominion Grading Service) and was in business for about 2 years

Well well, I went to their website and they have all of those MS70 and PR70 graded coins displayed promenently at the top of the page. They may well put out a good product but there isnt much room for a new reincarnated grading service in the market.

Except by now, changing your name to PCI for name recognition in coin grading is like changing your name to Michael Moore to promote weight loss and grooming products.

I look for name brand slabs but sometimes I'll buy a nice coin at a good price in a second tier slab. I don't even look at the other slabs.
