Depends on who you ask, but personal experience as a part time dealer/full time time collector is that better date Barber halves and nice large cents have been
and continue to be pretty hot. Nicely toned type is also high on the list.

Toned coins have been the latest hotness, if the toning is right many are paying past moon money.

If you're looking at return on investment, gold and silver coins as close to spot price as possible. Of course this is totally dependent on a ten year trend continuing its climb. PM forum is a good place to learn about the trend and most importantly the reasons behind it.

    I'm curious why you're asking.

I get pretty upset when the thing I'm trying to collect suddenly becomes hot. That just means I can buy less of it and expect a lower return at sale time.

Someday when I'm in the divesting instead of collecting mode I'll feel differently.

Women are always hot. My nephew trips out at the way they look at me. ( I trip out at the way they look at him image )

Seriously though, gold is hot. And as close to spot is HOW HOT ... unfortunately that left the door open for acquiring plenty of large cents and other coins at discounted prices, relative to numismatic value vs. intrinsic value.

    Grading is HOT
Stickers on premium quality graded coins brought a fresh new ringing sound in a lot of people's ears as it's fattened the wallet and ensured that "grading" stays above board.

In all, things have changed and stayed pretty much the same. Ask anybody. Most of us agree, in part, anyway.

    What's hot? That's easy.

1792-1933 pop tops with outstanding eye appeal, that are top 1-5% in grade, PCGS graded, and sporting gold stickers. That's what's hot.
