More Cool PENNY EXONUMIA!!

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,516 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got these fantastic photos back from Todd of more of my penny exonumia. As I mentioned before, I'm writing an article (and possibly putting together an exhibit for the Summer ANA) on "Penny Exonumia" so I was very excited to add these little guys to my collection.

I bought this rare Wonder Bread "Sticker Penny" from John Kraljevich. Even though it is a simplistic advertising medium, it seems that not many of these sticker pennies survived.

I also bought this interesting Hobo Penny from John - it's a little crude, but it was the first Hobo Penny I'd seen!

This hard to find piece is a "Pop Out" or "Push Out" penny made from a 1904 Indian cent from Teddy Roosevelt's 1904 Presidential Campaign

This is just a pretty toned penny with "The Lord's Prayer" carved or stamped on the reverse

These next few are sometimes referred to as "Pie Cutters/Crimpers" but since they don't have holes punched in the middle, they were perhaps used as clock gears; or they could have simply been carved to be used as jewelry

Neither. That's a "capped cent" The Lord's Prayer is on a thin copper shell that caps the reverse. You can sort of see the edge of the shell on the obverse pics. Capped cents were somewhat of a fad in the mid 1930s. There are several varieties. I have one with Santa Claus. I used to have one with Admiral Byrd. I think there is one with the Morro Castle Fire. Maybe a few others.

    Hi image

The Wonder Bread (Continental Baking Co.) had a large campaign for their presence and famous display/building at the 1939/40 New York World's Fair. I note the date here - do thses come earlier and later as well? That famous Wonder Bread building was made to look like their original wax paper wrapper and the red, yellow and blue dots were illuminated from inside at night. A spectacular building and one of several that tried to use the very shape to further their message; RCS was shaped like a tube when seen from the air, and Westinghouse was an omega as the end of beginning of all things electric. Ireland was shaped like a shamrock - and all just from the air. It was some Fair - 1,626 acres. For a quick and good illustrated read see the 1939 Fair book by Bill Cotter with assistance from yours truly. This is no plug - I make nothing from this work. Thanks for sharing these neat items!

    Best wishes,
    Eric

Here are a few other capped cents for comparison.

1935 Santa Claus capped cent. The cap came off when I was taking the pictures. That wasn't supposed to happen, but it gives a good opportunity to see the inside.

1935 Admiral Byrd capped cent, in original holder.
