The Laker girls and others were there because its also a sports card show. Not a big deal IMO. It looked like a good show from both sides, coins and sports cards.

I don't collect Morgan's or Merc's but those two major consignments in the April LM auction sound intriguing.

This show compared to the show one year ago are night and day, they are trying very hard to get people back at the show. For a few shows now there are more tables and they are filled. Did the coin people care for the autographs, probably not. But it got people in the door and the bourse stayed busy on Sat well into the afternoon, well after the sports people left. Never saw that before.

The few dealers and collectors I spoke to shared your sentiment. You do what you gotta do and hold your nose sometimes. MJ

    "A SAD TWIST BUT....

It seems the owners of the show are turning it back into a mini bazaar. On Saturday the big draw was someone from the Lakers and the Lakers cheerleading squad. No way this is a true coin show anymore!"

My daughter, Lauren, observed a young woman in her late 20's/early 30s crying in the corner of the room on Saturday where the "stars" were signing autographs. Lauren approached her and asked her if she was OK. She told Lauren that "----" had always been her "idol" growing up and that she came to the show just to meet him, talk to him and get his autograph. But, when she tried to do that she was told she had to pay to see him and pay to get his autograph ($100 or $150 she told Lauren). She had not expected that, had no money and was heartbroken. Lauren told her that when one meets their idol it is a very difficult physical and emotional experience that often does not live up to one's expectations. The woman smiled, stopped crying and thanked Lauren (and then headed for the exits). An observer approached Lauren and asked her if she was a psychologist. Lauren told her "not yet, I am a psychology major in college".

I may have missed it, but in the few times I read that "this and that" star would be at the show, I did not see a menu of pricing for the cost of meeting each star and the cost of signing this or that item. And, yes, I may have missed that menu as I was not paying close attention. Either way, I can understand how disappointed this woman was, but was very proud of Lauren. Had I been there, I would have tried to see to it that this woman got to meet her idol even if I had to pay some or all of it to make it happen.

Aside from coins I also collect comic books so I attend every comic con near me, which is alot. The charge for autographs from stars of any field has gotten pricey. Back when I started going to cons in the mid 80s autographs were free & taking a photo with them was free. The only thing they charged was $5 for a 8x10 photo.

All thats changed since about 2000. Now they charge for everything. Your lowest common celeb who may have only played "dead body #3" on CSI will charge $20 for a autograph & another $20 for a photo with them.

Bigger name stars from movies & tv charge the same and sometimes more. William Shatner was $100 at one con I went too. So its no surprise sports people charge more.

This bid football event is going on today. Look at the prices of long forgotten athletes....

I think there was a development or progress announced but no specifics.

This truly sucks. In the old days, HRH would give free grading opinions to the people that lined up to meet him.

    From the report:

"The gold prices realized do NOT surprise us. Even average widget gold sold really strong."

"Better gold definate is heavily demanded right now. Back in the office we have sold over a dozen better gold coins in the past TWO weeks."

I completely agree. Gold including generic, "unusual date", and rare date is smoking hot. It's really hard to buy stuff right now.

The fees were clear in the write up about West and Johnson attending the show. Back in the day, I would go to the hotel where visiting major league baseball players were staying and they all gave me their autographs as a professional courtesy. Even Jim Bunning, one of the most surly people to ever play the game, did so.
