... FIVE rolls of DATELESS 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickels!
I'm waiting to hear back from the company I hope will roll them into custom elongated coins for me.
If those negotiations go nowhere, it looks like I'll be having a big ol' pile of slick T1 Buffs lyin' around! That's a heckuva lot of slick Buffs. Still, I suppose a bunch of slick Type 1's can be interesting arts-and-crafts raw material for somebody, whether or not they ever get made into my custom elongates.
I liked how this seller said he had separated out all the acid-dated or dark culls and just left nice, honest, clean slicks. (You've gotta have your standards, y'know. Haha.)
I'm running low on my custom wooden dollars so thought it was time to kick the custom exonumia thing up a notch.
Cool thing is, the company that rolls 'em says on their website they can also punch a hole at one end of the elongated coin, so they'll be properly holey for my "Holey of Holeys" schtick.
I'll let y'all know how this develops, and will be sure to give a few away when the time comes.
Dunno about whether I'll end up with custom artwork on them or not. If it proves too expensive, I'll go with text only. But if I can afford it, there will probably be an owl design on them.
I liked the T1 Buffalo as a host coin, since it's their 100th anniversary.

The owl sounds like a great design plus you must hole them.

Why don't you take them down to the railroad yard and put them on the tracks and let
a train flaten them out. We used to do that out in a vaccant field near the tracks where
I lived back in the 50s & 60s. It was hard to find them some times after the train went by.

The thought crossed my mind, but unless the railroad will allow me to put a custom wheel on one of their locomotives, those would just be flat nickels. Having a train smush 'em and then having to manually drill 'em and stamp 'em with a design or lettering would be a bit too much, and more expensive and hasslesome in the long run (even without said custom railroad wheel and/or counterstamp punch).

H&C- I know one carver ("BILLZACH" who used to post here), but I would think that the hobo nickel carvers would probably want host coins with a little bit more detail than your average dateless Buffs, wouldn't they?

Some of those can be acid treated. You may have a few 1913sTp.2 or 1913d's or 16/16's or 18/17's or 14d's. Even acid treated can be valuable.Just reminding,If not aware. -joey
Only the type 1 has the buffalo standing on a mound.

<< <i>Ambro- I think the price of those machines might still be in the same ballpark now, but obviously I cannot afford to buy one, so I'll have to contract the work out to somebody who owns one and can make the dies and all. I'm not sure how involved that process is. I'd love to see them do it.

Usually, the carvers want a visible date on the lost coin.

I don't expect any cherrypicks, but was encouraged to see that he said he pulled out all the nastier culls and discolored pieces. This is supposedly nothing but a bunch of nice honest-wear slicks.

<< <i>I'll look 'em over before they go get smashed. (Haha- smashed- sounds like they're going out bar-hopping.)

There was a nice elderly couple selling custom elongated cents at the 2012 GNA show - their table was right inside the bourse entrance. I bought a couple for my dad who collects elongated. If you can wait a few weeks, this year's GNA show is coming up soon (March?) and they're likely to return. Otherwise there's a slim chance - but a chance - I have their business card at the office. >>
We'll see. I'm still waiting to hear back from the first person I contacted. Todd (of BluCC photo fame) PM-ed me with another recommendation for somebody named Don Berry. I haven't checked him out yet, but I will.
