"Why did I bid on that?"
"Why did I bid on that?"
The words crossed my mind within a few nanoseconds of placing a high bid on a coin at Heritage on Wednesday night. It was not a super expensive coin, but expensive enough that it would limit me buying other things. Not a fantasticly good deal, but okay purchase. Not a coin I have been seeking for my collection, but an upgrade in a 2nd tier area of interest. Not an outstanding example but a decent coin in an OGH.
It gnawed on me that night and into the next morning. I thought that surely I would be the winning bidder. Who would pay more for it? Then, at exactly 10:03 yesterday morning, I received a text from Heritage informing me that I was outbid. Relief. Joy. Celebration. And then three new and far better coin opportunities thrust in my lap. What a break!
Ever happen to you? (I would be shocked if it has not.)

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Robert, it has not. I started attending coin auctions run by George Bennett at the Masonic Hall in Van Nuys, CA., when I was in high school. You had to pay attention. He moved very fast. If you looked at him, it was a bid. If you belched, it was a bid. If you farted, it was a bid.
I quickly learned that I had to look at the lots, select the ones I liked, set maximum bids, and stick to them. It has been that way ever since.
At the Cardinal auction, one of Bruce Morelan's coppers which I really liked, was sold. I did my phone bid, got blown out of the water, and I was done. I could have gone one increment higher than they person who won the coin, but as that was over my max bid for the coin, I didn't consider doing it.
I learned that if there isn't anything out there which you like for what you think is a reasonable price, it's best not to buy anything and spend the funds on something else.
