What on earth that auction wasn't set to end for another 3 days or so...I guess the seller pulled a quick one because the original listing shows that it's no longer available:

Haha yeah I was watching the original listing. I guess someone messaged him and offered him 750 for it to end it early. I think the last bid on the original auction was 150 bucks or so.

Wait- I am slightly confused. Numismedia has this thing going for just over $400, whereas the NGC price guide has it at $1500. Is the $1500 the accurate number

My original impression was either a scam listing or stolen goods.

ahh gotcha. Yeah this is absolutely a 1500 dollar coin. The last ms62's brought about 1300 bucks at auction and that was several years ago and they were kind of ugly.

Good luck getting this coin for $400. Check Heritage Auction results for over/under grades.

The last two auctions of this date in MS in PCGS and NGC went for $6k+ and $4k+ respectively in MS63

The last MS61 in an ANACS went for $1.3k in 2008.

it loos like it was canceled with a decent top bid, so if someone offered a price to end the listing, it was for a good amount

Numismedia actually lists the 1840 quarter, with drapery, in MS62 for $1500. Were you looking at the type value on the line above?

Someone is going to make some cash for sure....old holder which means it could be a possible upgrade and I think the toning is going to be nice in hand. Hell send it to CAC image

This was on my list too. I tought it was to end at a later date and I was willing to pay double. Something must be up.

Those early darkish holdered MS coins tended to be weak on luster and often ignoring a touch of rub. It could literally be anything from AU58+ to MS63.
If NGC was able to grade the Norweb 1842-0 sd 25c in AU58 (raw) as MS63 back in 1988, then most any grade was possible in the 58-63 range....even then.

I owned an early holdered, solid MS63 1840 25c in 1988 (purchased raw in at auction in mid-1980's as MS63 via dealer Larry Whitlow). What was somewhat annoying
is that I accepted the MS63 grade on the first and only attempt from NGC. I sold the coin to Martin Haber who promptly upgraded it to MS64...doubling the price from
$3,500 to $7,000. The only finer specimen I ever ran across was the very nice MS65+ Norweb coin which fetched around $20K in 1987/88. I did have an interest in the
coin until a dealer told me they had a "buy" (at any price) bid on the coin from their customer. That was a big money coin for that time...about the same price range as a
gem 1872-s. Would not be surprised if that coin was of MS66 quality today.
