Post a Duplicate That You Can't Bear to Sell

I bought this 1854-D half eagle at the 2002 ANA World's Fair of Money in NYC. It has the orange cast that a lot of 1854 Dahlonega coinage possesses, due to an increase in copper in the alloy. I purchased the coin from Al Adams (Gold Rush Gallery), via Doug Winter. The 2002 edition is my most memorable ANA to date, so this piece holds some sentimental value as well. For the record, it is graded AU55.

image

A year or so later, I bought a second 1854-D half eagle, from Alpine Numismatics, this time in a green label AU53 holder. I really liked the coin, which also has the characteristic orange cast, and didn't mind that I had two nice 1854-D $5s. The photo is courtesy of BluCC.

image

A decade later, I still have both pieces and am hard-pressed to decide which one that I like better!

I recently sold my duplicate 53-D $5 to a fellow forum member who wanted it for his collection. One good turn deserves another. Please sell to me the one you decide to discard. image

I probably will end up keeping this for the foreseeable future as I really like it, but I've recently acquired a better example. I have a very disproportionate love of Antoninus Pius and need to realize there are dozens more emperors I can collect...

Purchased the first 1919 Lincoln on ebay in a 64rb holder. Got it in hand and loved the typical good strike for the date as well as the colors. That coin later upgraded to a 65rb. Then the second 1919 comes along in
a 65rb rattler holder and I couldn't pass it up. That coin did not upgrade when I sent both in for regrade. To this day I think its a 66rb and I can't part with either. Mel

I know it's not a huge, but it's one of (9) 1936 Doubled Dies I have uncovered in the last six months of searching bags of wheat cents. All type 1 and 2's of course and fall in the F-XF grade range. This was the first one (type 2) I pulled out back in August. Talk about clutch, I just can't sell them!

No pics, but an example of the same 'coin-undrum'.....
After a bit of searching a few years back, I finally found a nice VF example of an 1823/2 large cent that a dealer friend of mine had.
I really hadn't done the pricing research I should have, and the price seemed a bit steep. He assured me it was a good deal,
and he had an offer from another dealer for just slightly less than the price to me, that he was going to take if it didn't sell
at this show. I bought it, got it home, checked Heritage, and indeed saw similar examples had sold for several $hundred more, so
    I was quite happy.

Fast forward a couple months - same dealer friend was again set up, said he had some nice large cents on consignment, was I interested?
Sure - and out pops another very nice '23/2, same grade, and this one priced $hundreds LESS than the one I'd acquired a few months back.
I grabbed it in a heartbeat, figuring it a no-brainer easy profitable flip. The problem was, I get it home, and I can't decide which one I like better.
Both have pros and cons, both are solid and tough to find coins. Long story short - two years later, I still have both of them!

    Duplicates happen!

I often seek duplicates. The first two pairs were coins that were part of the same submission (by cert #) that I have reunited in my collection:

    image (sorry, no slab shot)
    imageimage

Sometimes I get a good deal on a duplicate and cannot resist...

    imageimage

Sometimes the duplicates are so different in quality or appearance that they do not seem like duplicates...

    image (ex-Norweb)

Sometimes I upgrade and do not get around to selling the undergrade...

    image
    imageimage

or do not want to sell the undergrade...

    imageimage
    image

And sometimes I eventually do sell the duplicate...

  • One of my Fav coins outside of Trade Dollars. Rare 20th Cen coin with a Naked Eye perceptibly Obv & Rev different Die pair with dramatic Double Die Obv and completely different Mint mark size and location on the Rev. Topped off with the Small D coin having both absolute rarity and Condition Rarity with only a couple dozen known in UNC. I have had the chance to buy 3 in 10 years and I swung 2 of them and can't bring myself to sell the lower one.

  • Here's an 1846-D $2.5 that I purchased uncertified in B&M's 1988 Norweb Collection, Part II. It was acquired by Mrs. Norweb's father, Albert F. Holden, prior to 1912, from Massachusetts dealer Elmer Sears. The photo is courtesy of BluCC.

    image

I bought the second 1846-D quarter eagle at the 2005 ANA in San Francisco. I couldn't resist the coin's superb originality. It's graded AU58, which I feel is a net grade, as the piece is Mint State, with a flaw on Miss Liberty's jaw.

In many cases, a lot of what has been posted in this thread are not really duplicates for one reason or another. That would be the case for me when it comes to Mercury Dime varieties. I have a Top Pop Mercury Dime MS67 1939 DDO and a non-Top Pop 1 finer in MS66FB. For the FB registry set the 66FB gives me the most points and for the non-FB registry set it is the MS67 that gives me the most points so I really can't sell either one until I find a 67FB...if one exists.

Given that 1958 is my birth year, I've got a fair amount of Roosevelts and a BUNCH of Franklins and Washingtons, both P & D.

Instead of posting a lot of 1958 material, here are two 1956 PCGS MS66FBL's that I'm keeping. I bought the first one slabbed and made the second.

While everything is for sale including my wife (cheap, offers welcome). I think the nuance here is that the owners are not soliciting for offers and are content keeping them currently.

I've found that mine tend to happen as more of a circumstance of timing.

I pick up a commem and then a week later another duplicate that I've either A.) coveted, B.) like just as much or better or C.) is to good a deal to pass on, pop up.

I have no reason to sell at this point, so hanging onto them is Aok with me.

    Coveted category.

    A. I had the first one and coveted the second one from seeing them previously, so when they came up I had to jump.

    image
    image
    image
    image

    B. ) I had the first one, but I liked the second one better.

    image
    image

C.) I had the first one, but the second one was a great deal.
