Your best coin purchase.

As well all know, there is no "free lunch" in coin collecting, but there can be a rare chance when something wonderful does indeed occur.

I would like to hear some stories of one getting a really good coin for cheap.

Examples would be like picking up a key date coin at a dealer, who didn't know it was a key date, finding a key date cheap at an auction, etc.

  • Here are some of my personal favorites.

    - A pawn shop owner set up at a flea market, had bags of cull coins from England and Ireland out of the early to mid 1800s. I bought them for like 25 cents a pop, and got 2-3 bucks each out of them.
He also had a franklin press token, got it for $8, sold it for over $125 on feebay.

Same flea market, different month, guy had a seated quarter I bought for $40 and flipped for $80.

Another guy had a bunch of Indian cents for 50 cents each, I picked probably a dozen or so out, and sold them all for $5-$10 each. They were in nice shape.

  • A few years ago I bought a nice clean looking 1966 Kennedy half dollar. Just for fun I sent it it for grading and it graded MS67. I think at the time it was a pop 2/1. I ended up selling it to a forum member for around $2400. It only cost me $4 plus grading fees. That was fun.

I won't define one of my "best" purchases as a rip, but rather is was about locating a really neat coin.

One of my favorites was my first error twenty-cent piece. About 15 years ago or so I was cruising the web one night and found Fred Weinberg's site. He has a listing for a "clam shell" error 1875-S twenty-cent piece for a very reasonable price (but a lot of money for me at the time). In fact, it was "on sale" because it apparently had went unnoticed (as I can't imagine why it would not have sold!).

Being a web listing, I had a feeling it was going to be sold and I was going to miss out. I sent Fred an email and he responded back to me the next morning. I was thrilled that he still had it and, get this, he sent it to me on memo! And he had never met me or dealt with me before.

The coin arrived shortly and it was great! A nice 40% "clam shell" lamination. Even though somebody had tried to "open it up" a little, it didn't matter as the piece is likely unique. Sorry, no images as it is a &$%#! to photograph.

Great coin, great price, great dealer. Yeah, that would be one of my best purchases. Thanks again, Fred.

And no, Alan, it's not for sale. image

Twelve years ago, I was able to buy an 1835 Classic Half Cent in MS 65 RB in an OGH for sheet at an auction. The coin is 40% RD and has even color on both obverse and reverse. I've never seen another one since then.

This was my best cherrypick of 2012. (Warning- Darkside content!)

But my best ever might have been this one, which came out of a bulk Wheatie lot and so cost me maybe a nickel or so.

It went XF40 at PCGS. I sold it somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 bucks.

When found in the bulk lot, it had a piece of dirt covering the mintmark.

That came off easily with a wooden toothpick, and presto! "D" stands for more than just "dirt"!

lordmarcovan, great cherry pick. A 14D in any state of preservation will change your day image

EDIT: Not a cherry pick, or a key but it was a screaming good deal for $75. The local flea market has done me well. It was housed in a cardboard flip. It was tough to contain myself, I was all giddy inside. I'll call it a 5, sure is a boomer IMO.

    Thanks. That was a rush.

So was diggin' these. Both were metal detector finds.

The 1787 half-real ain't worth too much but it was a thrill to dig. I found a holey 1776 a few feet away.

    << <i>A couple days ago :
A man came to my shop. He was way older than me and I'm 58. He had a coin worth over $500. I asked how much he wanted. He said, " Two hundred fifty cash". I told him, "I'll write a check". He walked. As he neared the door, I said, "Okay, okay... cash".
I still have his name, address, phone, lic.#, etc..., etc.,.. A requirement of the job. I can't stand the paperwork and my quarterly taxes are due 5 days earlier than they used to be. Still , if I get the coin in a PCGS holder, everyone will win.

Guess the coin and the grade and win $100. (cash)

P.S. This man found the coin after searching thousands and thousands. (tough hint) >>

My best purchase would have to be my 1909sVDB,F 12 PCGS. When I finally pulled the trigger to own,I've never regretted since! History and the best of the Lincoln coins,I think I made a right decision?I probably will NEVER let it free from my collection. imageimage

Found my avatar in a proof set at a local show. I think I paid something like $5 for the set. PCGS PR69dcams are listed at $7k in the PCGS price guide. One of the best investment finds of my career...

I won this 1914-D on e-bay listed with bad images . The seller listed this coin as AU. I took a chance won the coin $158.00 it's graded now as a MS-61. I still think it's under graded and I still own it. But by far NOT my best coin purchase...CHD
