How many Morgans are slabbed MS69 by PCGS?

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,484 ✭✭✭✭✭
I stumbled on this one slabbed by NGC, what a looker/wowzer, talk about a clean cheek, oh my.
I have no affiliation with the seller, one heck of a coin though. Is QRC a member here? If it were me, I would attempt
to get it stickered wouldn't you?

He was Bammed from these boards.

I believe I saw this at the FUN show, and I believe another Dealer has possession of it now!

Looks like a mint employee hand picked that one off the press back in 1880! No way did that one get tossed around in a canvas bagimage

Exactly my thoughts, no way this baby made contact with other pieces.

Thanks for the pop info CarsonCityGold. To the best of my knowledge NGC has certified 4, so that makes 13
    between the two in 69.

From the pics/video the NGC coin does look like a bonafide 69 but it's gonna need a green bean on it to pull that kind of cash.

...also, you'd think NGC would slap a star on it, too, no?

I also wonder things like: was it crossed or raw before grading?, did it start as a 68/68+ in another slab?, has CAC ever beaned a 69 Morgan?

Looks like a definite PL in the vid... although the kid comes off as a Coin Vault d-bag selling coins out of his bedroom.

He's just going under a new name now. But it seems to be a nice coin.

I saw that NGC coin. It's really nice. But I admit that I have no clue what the difference is between a 68 and a 69, other than about $45,000.

I've also seen two of the PCGS MS69s, and I have to say they didn't knock my socks off and make me feel goofy in terms of eye appeal and lustre like I think a 69 should. I found that odd at the time, because many MS67s have done it to me over the years.
    When in doubt, don't.

That coin is AWESOME!! Here is the PCGS MS69PL if you want to see it. HERE

You forgot about the part of the bedroom being at his parents house. That said they appear to have done an admirable job keeping him away from sharp objects and guns. Only makes me wounder what medicinal combination was employed???

IMO, the coin looked like a 68. It is VERY nice, but there was a bit too much chatter for me to like it as a 69.

That said, best of luck to the seller!

Wow. How about the date breakdown of the MS69s? I'd imagine they're mostly S mints and 1880s

Many dealers, myself included, know the history of that coin and the circumstances of how and when that coin was made. That particular coin had been shopped and bounced around a bit before it landed with its current owner.

How and when it was made? I would think it was 1880 or so, in San Fran. And who cares if it was shopped around? Instead of what, given away??

Sounds like it's a marginal or a "just made it" coin that got an upgrade into a 69 slab after a few tries. Am I close?image

In this context, "made it" means "got it into its current slab".

    Hi Perry,

I wonder about these things as well. If submitted 22 times to get a 69, I'd say the 21 times that came back 68 are quite accurate.
I thought we did not mention this person in here anymore?

I'm not privy to all of the history of the particular coin as some others claim to know.

I know the coin was listed previously in an older NGC holder, roughly 10 years old or so, and was graded MS69 in that older holder. You can see the older holder in his close up video in the auction listing. So the MS69 grade wasn't given to this coin recently. Looking at the current listing, it appears the coin has been reholdered and I imagine it looks even better now in the new edgeview holder.

I've seen this coin in hand and it's the cleanest looking business strike Morgan I've personally seen... ever. And I've seen a couple of the other MS69 examples.

The rumors and gossip on this are so stupid.

"I know how it was made. It was bounced and shopped. Submitted 22 times. It wouldn't cross to PCGS UNLESS they had a bunch more later to submit"????? What is this foolishness?

That coin is SWEET, even wrapped in tin foil!

Eagle's legs and top-mid area of liberty's hair (straight up from the corner of the eye) keep this at a 68 in my book.

Use the zoom function and see if you disagree.
Not all bad news. Still a great coin. 40K+ nope......15-20K maybe

Not sure...but Didn't this roll across SB or HA within the past year or two?

Yep, it is definitely a 68. I zoomed in and even used a 10X loop to make the image even bigger. NGC blew it again!!!

More magnification is not needed. Just use the low power zoom function eBay has built into their software. I know its not very powerful but it's more than plenty. NGC's grading staff is talented group of folks....and mostly I think they are spot on. I just don't agree with this one.

I think the coin is great and properly graded after seeing it in hand at the FUN show. Holsonbake Numismatics was the dealer who was selling it. I've seen a ton of MS68's and MS68*'s and +'s and this is no MS68. It's like an MS68.9 if anything. It's the grade and I don't think the seller is being too unreasonable in his asking price, however, it's still a little too much for my frugal tastes!

I'd rather have that coin or a bridge in Brooklyn then 1000 MS 63 Morgans. yuck. MJ
