Two 1944-S 50C MS66 sold at Heritage

Both are PCGS, one sells for over 4 times the other.
Would anyone like to comment?
I have my opinion but will refrain for now.
One brings $587 with juice
The other brings $2,585.00 with juice.

This 44-S I paid a lot more then coin 2. A lot more. Tough to photo but this is pretty awesome in hand. MJ
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Wow, now that is nice.
Lets look at a Walker and judge it like we would a SLQ or Merc dime. Maybe even a Franklin.

What are these things you speak of?

<< <i>Lets try looking at this in a slightly different way.....take away the toning premium......for me to say that is funny...lol but lets do that for giggles.

I'm not sure you can take away the toning premium. If all coins looked the same then yes for one to sell at 4X the price in the same perceived grade would be weird. There is more to pricing then grade, strike and mintage.

How do we grade these coins.....besides the obvious eye appeal, toning and luster?

Bag marks and hits, and the first coin has plenty of both.

Your right MJ.
I think I phrased it wrong. I might be making the obvious too complicated as well.
Lets say.....BESIDES the toning premium....why so much of a price difference?
Now I am also assuming this coin was purchased by a Walker guy as he would be able to pick it up right away.

I'm guessing you are hinting at a trumpet tail S or a 005 RPM. I'm in China on an extremely slow server and can't access Heritage without much pain and suffering. I made the mistake of opening up The PennyLady's Show Report and I almost brought all of China to it's knees.

This date/mm is known for its weak strikes though- i've been told when the forum was giving mine the 'go-over'.
Coin two does have some tics in the skirt that aten't spectacular... So, I'm thinking it's toning/strike and green bean... and to top it off.....
Just plain old eye appeal... Am I missing something? A DDO perhaps?

This particular issue was struck by a mouse rather then a moose. Strike is always an issue on the 44-S. You are not wrong is your observation although with Steph you never know what side of the boat she is fishing off of and what she is after

I must admit you are right MJ and nwcoast you nailed it. This is an instance where buying the coin and not plastic makes you a winna'
And to think MJ.....I get accused of being shallow and just a self promoting bullion collector
Thanks everyone for playing

Seeing and studying the photos side by side has me thinking that the less expensive coin actually has the superior strike!
Check out the areas right below the breast plates.... Looking at them separately and back and forth had me concentrating on different areas.
Fun, interesting and thought provoking thread!
It's a given that the lighting has more contast in photo one as well.

Hello
I thought so too for a moment but look at the highest skirt lines, deepest in the die; the first coin is flat there and also look right under the breast plate you mentioned.

Whether that second coin is worth that kind of money?? Beauty is ALWAYS in the eye of the beholder. Bob [supertooth]

Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!
They appear to be one grade apart. Not much of a contest.
<< <i>First coin has a very scuffy right obv field, weaker strike, weaker luster, mottled/unappealing toning, worse overall eye appeal, and no stickie.

I respectfully disagree, coin one appears to my eyes to have better luster and strike. We agree of the rest of the assessment.
