WOW!!!

I was tracking this one, but I think the final price was insane! I wonder how this coin will look in hand, will those colors or luster really pop? I'm not as experienced with Heritage images, so just wondering.

Either way, the color and originally won the day.
Truly a gorgeous coin for being slightly circulated.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
ATS is across the street, the NGC forum which I like as well

I have no explanation as to how this coin fetched a multiple of a multiple. It would be interesting to know more about the thought process involved behind the bidding once it got above $1,200.
<< <i>MF called this coin a one of a kind, super special toner, with as many superlatives as he could muster. >>
Well then that explains the price.
I would not want that coin, it's just way too dark...

That was rude x2.

<< <i>Yeah, did anyone bother to look up the Overton variety? If it's the finest known of an R5, that would justify the price. That being said, I bet it's not. >>
It's your run of the mill (ahem) R1. O.104.
Mark's thread ATS is entitled "perhaps THE most beautiful CBH I have ever seen". Think that helped push up the price? (I'm sure that wasn't Mark's intent.)

I too am sure that wasn't MF intent but he is held to a higher standard partial due to his reputation but more so the large following of hobbyists that he has that have put their absolute trust in him and his opinions. Just as insiders and reporters must be careful on their proclamations to the public on stocks in the Banking world, People who are held in that position as to have a crystal ball and or tastes need to be extra careful of what they say and to whom.
I think this result is more a statement of the power of Marks public statement and that particular audience then the absolute quality of that pitcular coin although I would admit it would have brought strong money if he had never voiced his honest opinion. I would be surprised to say the least if a member of ATS didn't buy the coin.
Ankur said he won the coin, I'm happy for him. I couldn't spent that much but if he enjoys it, more power to him

Nice coin.
I would grade it a 55 with pretty toning.
But it is still a 31.
I would not pay $500 for this coin. But that's just me.

I agree. Except, well, I'd pay $500. But 4 digits is a little silly for an 1831 AU.
I would grade it 53. The gold sticker bumps it for eye appeal, no doubt.

<< <i>JRocco, Come on my friend, did you not see the OGH and the gold bean? Get with it! >>
You know between all that green on the coin and the gold on the bean I might go ALMOST $500....

Presumably he was talking about the color, and that is really a matter of personal taste.

That is a great point
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
is washed out, which I always subtract points for. Again, the color is eye-popping, and clearly what
brought the big $$$, but as I've evolved, I now prefer something a bit more subtle on 19th century
silver.
In the end analysis, who is anyone to pass judgment on what someone else thought the coin is worth?
My earlier comment that the price was "insane" was relative to my own priorities and value system as
a collector.
Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Quite frequently coins like this get shuttled off to the Internet-only auctions at the end of the "Big Boy" auctions based solely on grade/book value.
Wouldn't you think someone at Heritage would recognize this as speical and put it in with the live auctions? I've seen it time and time again.
<< <i>Here is a better shot at the coin. Not my pics nor did I buy it. That coin was always going to sell for $3000-$4000 with or without Mark's post ATS. I've been told the coin looks much better in hand. My guess is that this coin was bought by a toned type guy or someone who just loves beautiful coins and it not a slave to grades. MJ
Well that picture does make it look exotic but I worry when worn coins tone like that but that is a preference not a rule kind of thing. I disagree with your assessment that it would have brought 3-4k even while conceding it is more your market area and expertise. In a wild bit of speculation, I am all but convinced that at those levels most dealers were well out of the bidding and it was a couple of impressionable collectors chasing a perceived Gem. What can never be proven is if the perception of its elite status was their own of Mr Feld's.
With all of that said I don't care about the coin's future liquidity if the collector is happy or Mark's free speech. I just think it is slightly poor form to publicly comment on an active auction esp by someone held in such high regard. Once again my opinion; but the conversations Mark has among his dealer peers should be different than proclamations made on a public forum to mostly random collectors of "varying skill levels" who put Great to unlimited faith in his opinions.
If he gets a pass for one coin, how about 2, 3 , 25? What if Mark did a post with his top 10 picks of every auction? How long before a conflict of interest came up either between him or another dealer/collector/auction house. Remember what is great for the consigner is bad for the bidder and vise verse. If it was a very rare Trade Dollar I would be mad.
