A little help with this 1909 Saint

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,758 ✭✭✭✭✭
My boyfriends brother sent me this image. He owns this 1909 Saint and I will
assume the bezel is 14k, maybe 18kt. Don't know the total weight. He wants me to sell it for him.
I was wondering what is it worth? I searched on eBay and see it may be worth $1,850- $2,100

Would you agree with that amount? Or less/more?

Looks like the 9/8 variety, which surprisingly is not worth much of a premium.

That said, it also looks to be of questionable luster/color.

Tell him it needs to be checked for authenticity before it can be sold. Where is the piece?

From the pic it loos like the variety to me as well, but as you said no premium.

The coin is in Arizona. I remember when he purchased it and I briefly saw it in hand and nothing struck me funny
to think it was not genuine. I think it's just the photo.

Probably more thank 2k as that bezel looks heavy. Have him weigh it

If you sell it for him, and give him the money, and then it turns out to be bad, you could be liable for the refund.

Where in Arizona is he? I may be able to give you a recommendation where he could take it.

I know the area well went to ASU ( architecture) and lived there for some years.
I also know a few dealers, two in Scottsdale and one in Mesa. He lives on the west side
Surprise area....I don't know anyone near there.

Why is it surprising? The 9/8 is fairly common and is seen more frequently than the non-overdate 1909 Saints. Coin appears real but should be authenticated as Tom suggested. Based on discussions with my wife it'll be a tough sell since most women prefer smaller coins for necklaces due to the heavy weight of larger gold coins.

Take it to a coin shop and see if they will offer to buy it. That will establish if it is real.

If the offer is reasonable, take it. $2000?

because its a jewelry piece its still priced closer to melt than not, but the bezel, if 14k, will bump it. take it to someone who will pay closer to 80%, as most gold buyers try to get you between 30% and 60% on melt. Know your gold weights prior to going in.
