13 Years ago....................
Give or take a couple of months, a US Mint employee screwed up big time and placed Washington Quarter Obverse Die's (at least 3) into the new Golden Dollar coining press in conjunction with a Sacagawea Dollar Reverse Die's.
The Washington/Sacagawea Mule Coins were produced and shipped off to the Coin Rollers in Philadelphia! Once the error was discovered, federal investigators were able to confiscate hundreds of thousands of these mule errors before they entered circulation!
A couple of enterprising US Mint Employee's recognized the collectible "value" of such errors and began selling them or at least "offering" them for sale. Since this is against the law, the employees were indicted and spent some time behind bars!
In May of 2000, the discovery piece was found in a $25 roll of Sacagawea dollars opened in Arkansas by Frank Wallis.
The rest, as they say, is history and what numismatic dreams are made of! So far, 14 pieces have been accounted for and since their release was purely accidental, the chances of them being confiscated is slim to none.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Let 'em buy 'em. To me the coin is a gimmick. At least few of them were rumored to be some less than "in error."
I can live without one these things, especially at those prices.

Personally, I'd only want one if I found it and even then I'd probably just put it up for auction. I'm a little surprised at the price since prior examples went for much less and one collector has 8 of them.
