Holed 7070 Type Set - Lots of Pictures!

This is yet another type set that I put together - all the coins have holes or have been plugged. I did not set many rules, like others have, I just picked those coins that I found to be interesting.

Again, hope you enjoy all of the pictures!

Wow, consider me impressed!

That's one heckuva "Sacagawea dollar"! Pretty bodacious "Silver Eagles", too!

Some of those mid- to late-20th century types like the 40% Kennedy were probably pretty tough to find already holed, eh?

PS- I've gotta say "wow" again on the Small Eagle Draped Bust stuff.

Well, I have to come clean on the Bicentennial's - I cheated

those I did myself (I just wanted to fill the holes). And they are so common I figured there is not much loss in value.

If you've impressed the Holey of Holeys, you've done something grand. This is a terrific set. Well done.

A very interesting set! I have been thinking about starting another 7070 album, this time doing something unusual. I didn't think that I could find enough holed coins to do one (but you are close). Contemporary counterfeits would be fun, but also probably not feasible. Does anyone think that a 7070 set of counterstamped coins could be done?

Sonorandesertrat - I too thought about a counterstruck type set but some of the prices I have seen have deterred me.

Also a type set of Love Tokens could be really neat too - but again I could see that getting really expensive and hard to complete - dont know the last time I saw a Love Token made from a Bust Dollar! But it would be neat!

I don't get this. Coins with holes in them are simply damaged...what would be the thrill of collecting damaged, less valuable coins?

The thrill of the hunt? Enjoying coins for what they are, damaged or not. Filling up an album is always exciting.
The value of the coins is not really important if you truly enjoy collecting.

Well Darwin,

We can hopefully agree that jmcu12 is allowed to collect whatever he wants. Many coins in a 7070 are cost-prohibitive in high grades. Some people just like collecting coins with issues. You can date girls with all their limbs if you want to. I think the collection is plenty interesting just like it is. Well done.

Really cool set. Looks like it took a lot of time and effort. Be fun to know who and why the coins were holed.

When I see a holey, I always wonder about the person who made the hole. It almost makes the coin more interesting, in a personal way. You can see wear, so obviously people handled a worn coin. But with a holey, at some point, a specific person actually had to make some effort to put a hole in that specific coin.

Of course, I don't own a single one.

A few of these coins lead me to think that the owner may have holed a few of them. How many holed 1776 - 1976 Bicentennial coins have you seen and why would someone have holed them?

He confessed to drilling the set of Bi-centennial. I think they are silver. When he drilled them, he took out the mintmarks I could have seen. Awfully nice shape for the circulation variety.

Paul, are they silver? I like the 98-S Half, and a few others.

I have the 1976-D quarter, P and D halves, and the D (I and II) dollars. Still need a few Phillies and all the silver ones. Obtained from banks that will part with them. I never hole, I do knock out plugs when I can.

Very Cool as complete! I once started a large cent date set all with holes in them. I had about 30 different dates in the Whitman bookshelf album and even some in the 1790's when I got an offer that i could not refuse. In the 1970's you could get large cents with holes in them for under $1 each. I did not pay more than $1 for any of them.

The bicentennials are silver. I figured they were cheap enough and if I was going to hole some it might as well be the better ones.

And then I could not decide on where to drill so I just chose to remove the mintmarks

Edited to add that if I ever come across silver ones already holed then I will replace them.
