Interesting Looking Wreath Cent on the 'Bay

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 12,185 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sorry, hopefully one more skilled than I can 'linkify' the post for us.....
I just thought this looked unusual - perhaps a contemporary counterfeit?
Doesn't seem to match anything in my ref book, it seems to have some characteristics of the "Smith Counterfeit"
in the Dan Holmes auction catalog I have.
Or is it perfectly legit, and I need to keep studying?

Yes, that's it - thank you!

To add, I have no axe to grind with the seller, and certainly not accusing anyone of malfeasance,
it's just a learning opportunity for me.

Could be an S-6, but I noted that the Smith Counterfeits were produced from a normal S-6,
that was worn down, then 'skillfully' re-engraved.

Given the fact that PCGS and NGC will now put problem coins in "genuine" or net grade holders, I don't see why a dealer would offer a coin like this raw. Why take the chance and buy a raw coin like this given the counterfeit situation with the Chinese? The Chinese have not only gotten better in making counterfeits they are also simulating wear to make them look authentic. Low grade is no longer a consumer protection tool. They are even making worn Morgan dollars, not in silver, for the flea market business.

Years ago I saw one in Poor-1 that was PCGS certified. It had great surfaces and color, but it was very worn.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

smith "counterfeit" is a bit of a misnomer imo. - not that i'm saying this is one as i didn't study it that close. just enough to roughly attribute it.

authentic coins were altered (i don't recall seeing any that were worn flat and fully reengraved, just detailed basically highlighted) albeit possibly extremely altered, they still remain authentic. more or less in the same category where mint marks are removed or dates changed on authentic coins.

pretty much the only thing i didn't like about the coin is how the "cuts" in the bottom of the reverse letters seem all worn down as if the bases of the letters were always just flat, but is easily explainable by a lot of wear.

I'm not talking about the collectors who are specialists in early copper. Many of them could be doing authentication work for the slab companies. I'm talking about the casual collector who wants a type coin who is buying it from a generalist dealer. Although Reynolds does have some less than stellar coppers from time to time, most of his material is very nice, and he tends to avoid very many problem or low grade coins unless it is a rare variety. Therefore if you are looking for what some might view as a "hole filler" it is best to buy a certified one IMO.
