Georgia Tech Whips Southern Cal in 2012 Sun Bowl; Post Some Old Gold

This afternoon, Georgia Tech defeated a fine Southern Cal team, 21-7, in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 1973, when I was in the stands, cheering on the Yellow Jackets as a Tech freshman. Since Tech's colors are Old Gold and White, post some Old Gold!

Here's my offering, an 1845-D half eagle, with subtle, old gold coloration. The piece is ex-Arthur Montgomery (Stack's Auction '84) and was purchased in the July 1984 auction by Forum member Dahlonega. He kindly favored me with the piece in 2003. The photography is courtesy of BluCC.

so the '29ers beat out the '49ers (actually, I'm certain you know this already -- many of the '29ers later became the '49ers)

    << <i>GK,
    who is Montgomery? >>

Arthur L. Montgomery, former President of the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, commissioned the Atlanta firm of Hanc0€k and Harwell (in the mid-1970s) to assemble the finest known set of Dahlonega Gold Coins. Mr. Montgomery felt that the finest set should reside in Georgia. His complete collection of Dahlonega gold coins was sold in Stack's portion of Auction '84. Almost 30 years after it was dispersed, the collection is still considered by many to be the finest Dahlonega set of its era.

Although not quite as old as the 1852, this is also a favorite of mine... image

I too am a Yellow Jacket, class of 1995, and again in 1998. As a freshamn, my first game was at home, right across the street from Techwood Dorms, where we watched the Jackets fully trounce Chattanooga 44-9. They went on to win all games that season save for a single tie against North Carolina, and were awarded the UPI national championship. They lost the AP poll that year to Colorado, in spite of a numerically better season, as Colorado did lose a single game. I believe the argument was that Colorado faced tougher opponents that year. I'll tell you what though, when GA Tech beat Virginia that season at their homecoming, who at the time were the leading team in both polls, we stormed the field at Bobby Dodd Stadium and tore down the goalpost.

Anyway, no gold to share, but I believe the color qualifies it! Woo Hoo!

How the mighty have fallen. Well, hopefully to rise again...
Maybe we should front off San Francisco issues against those Southern Gold - all of them, even if NO did use our gold to strike a lot of theirs....

Georgia is currently playing Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl. It's bad football form to ever confuse Tech and Georgia!

Here's another piece with nice, coppery-orange highlights. This coin is ex-James A. Stack Collection, which was auctioned by Stack's (no relation), in October 1994. In keeping with the Georgia Tech-USC theme of this thread, this half eagle likely contains California gold, as more than half of all of the gold that was deposited at the Dahlonega Mint in 1851 came from California. The photo is courtesy of BluCC.
