how to slab clemente signed card? Updated 22Jan - Questionable!

Came back questionable

My dad wants to slab his 1961 topps clemente autographed card, but we are trying to decide how to do it with regards to qualifiers. Its for his PC, but we can't completely ignore possible resale value.
The Front centering is about 10/90 T:B. That limits the grade to a 2 supposedly. But, other than centering, conditionally, the card is probably a 4-5. So, the way I see it, here are the possibilities;

RedFlip Authentic.

One rout you may want to go is auto grade only, thats a 9 or 10 autograph strength when most Clemente signed cards barely have any ink left over...just another thought!

Very strong looking auto and since it would be graded authentic, I'm sure most collectors realize that lots of cards weren't being reproduced until the 80's and forward meaning he had to have signed it before 1973. Also, if one was going to reproduce this card, Im sure they wouldn't make it OC. Blue PSA DNA Flip is the route I would take. Getting it authenticated along with a score can hurt your chances when it comes to resale value.

The signature is what creates the value here...........the card being off-centered will not affect the value much....The card presents well otherwise. ( not a beater!)

It is obvious to anyone that collects that the card is authentic. That is a very strong Clemente auto. Blue flip with auto grade.

Well what is it going to cost to get it in a Red Flip? It surely will not fit into any of the Specials, so don't you have to pay the listed fee for a Clemente? That's $150.00 plus shipping and ins ... close to the $200 you mentioned.

Edited to add: BTW ... that's an AWESOME looking signature! I am usually one to shy away from the Blue Flip on authentic cards, but I have to agree with some of the others ... that signature is a "9" or "10" and I think the value is in the signature ... it does not matter WHAT the signature is on ... I'd go BLUE FLIP for the higher potential sale.

Based on my reading of the fee page, it would be $35 for Express service.

Not sure what Spence charges via SGC or Beckett, but an alternative.

Spence is 100.00 for Clemente authentication, Im quite sure.

Advantage of Red Flip Authentic - person will know the card is original and unaltered. For some, that is important.

Advantage of Blue Flip w/auto grade - Very strong auto and the auto grade should be high.

I dont think you can go wrong with either route. The card has great eye appeal even being OC because it has excellent registration and no big creases. Overall, its a real beauty.

Red Flip authentic on that one. I think the dark background card would hurt your autograph grade with a blue flip, and as you mention, red flip will be much cheaper to have done then blue

I guess I am real confused on the pricing (I have only sent autographed cards in on the Specials). Are you saying that they will authenticate and slab a $3,000.00+ card for $35.00? I thought you had to look up the individual on their chart to see what they charge for that auto. Looks like $150.00 for Clemente. What am I missing?

I agree with Mike this would be your most cost effective way to go... Personally I think low grades take away from the card and signature. If you ever need to sell you could always send it in for the blue flip auto grade but for a personal collection red flip is a solid pick.

red flip authentic, would only cost $35-$50. i had foxx card done the same way, would've cost at least double going through psa/dna.

Based on PSA's SMR a Clemente signed card is worth $1000. If you check out the standard PSA fee chart; http://www.psacard.com/fees/index.html, you see that under Express the footnote marked 2 and the declared value statement under it. High value cards for Red Flip go under any service that matches its value level since the standard $25 service of "AUTOGRAPHED CARD GRADING & AUTHENTICATION" is capped at $500 value.

Two options that make the most sense...

1. PSA/DNA Red Flip - AUTHENTIC (removes the card grade) and allows for use on the PSA Registry for an autographed set or player set
2. PSA/DNA Red Flip - Grade for card (my guess would be that the card would grade a straight PSA 5 with the authenticated autograph)

I think either would garner about the same return, but the grade allows those using it for registry purposes to get little more Registry value for the PSA 5 versus the PSA 1 scoring for AUTHENTIC. I've found the grades on PSA/DNA cards to be a tad bit more lenient that unsigned cards.

A Blue Flip would probably pull a PSA 8 for the signature and that would not add much more value than an AUTHENTIC Red Flip...

you should make better scans and post them on the n54 autograph side. a few members there i would trust their opinions over spence, and the opinion is free! if you want to know if it's authentic, ask n54...of course if you're looking to sell you will need a JSA or psa/dna cert.

Well I guess I was going to post that because of everybody else who was giving their expert opinion that it was good. Basically it's flip a coin when submitting things like that. I mean people have gotten things signed in person that the experts have then deemed fake.

It happens more than u think. I had PSA fail a bunch of stuff that was real, that JSA passed later.
Not bashing PSA, I am sure it would happen the other direction too but all my stuff goes to PSA first.
